Hey, Can I get some Service Please?
I remember my grandmother telling me stories of my grandpa. He had done his service in WWI and despite the Kaiser’s best efforts he had survived the war and gone home to continue the family business and raise a family.
The family business in those days was that of a furniture and cabinet maker. My grandpa provided his services to the whole town and a few near outlying farms. Now I use the term services very loosely here as the meaning has changed over the years.
Once upon a time the customer was King or Queen and anyone who provided for them did so as a service, even if it involved material goods. People came to my grandpa and asked him if he could make a specific piece for them and he did so. Continue reading
