by mary Watson Writer

The Emmy Awards is a show which involves hundreds of celebrities and famous people in the world in one room. It presented numerous annual events throughout the year and honored various sectors of the television industry. The two popular ceremonies which grab most of the audiences’ attention are the Daytime EmmyAwards and the Primetime Emmy Awards. Other recognizable events in this award show include honoring national news, national sports programming, documentaries show, and engineering and technological achievements, including the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards. The International Emmy Awards are presented throughout the country at different times throughout the year. Now the question arises whether we will be going to witness the event this year during the period of pandemic quarantine or not? Luckily, it is on, and Reginald Hudlin and Ian Stewart in a recent interview with Variety reveals that it will be a shitshow but expertly coordinated shitshow with some unusual amount of moving parts.

The Emmy is named after “immy,” an informal term for an image orthicon tube that was widely used in cinemas in the 1930s to 1980s. The award is a statuette of a woman holding an atom. It was designed by a television engineer Louis McManus who made his wife’s statuette as the model. The ATAS rejected the design of award forty-seven times before finalizing the design of McManus in 1948. The Emmy is considered one of the four major American entertainment awards. The others are the Oscar for films, the Grammy for music, and the Tony for theatre.

The first Emmy ceremony was held on 25th January 1949 at the Hollywood Athletic Club. Shirley Dinsdale won the first Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Television Personality. In 2020, it will be the 72nd Emmy Award, which was scheduled for 31st May 2020. However, due to the pandemic COVID-19, it got delayed and postponed on 20th September 2020. Jimmy Kimmel will host the show, and the production team will be working out of Los Angeles’ Staples Center, the Microsoft Theater, which is the ceremony’s regular home. The nominations for the awards were announced on 28th July 2020, by Laverne Cox, Josh Gad, Leslie Jones, and Tatiana Maslany. A few changes in the awards, like the name of the category “Informal Series or Special” have been renamed to “Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special”. The production team announced that the number of nominees in the Outstanding Comedy and Drama Series has increased to 8. And on 29th July 2020, they announced that the ceremony would be virtual.

The stadium’s size allows room to maneuver under the protocols of COVID. In the interview, Hudlin said that the stadium is big enough to work under the safety protocols and would help maintain the appropriate distance from each other. Because the most important thing at this time is safety, and they will not compromise on that. Secondly, the show needs a massive number of wiring connections, because the nominees will not be present there. So they have to set cameras to where they will be. And since they will need a massive number of feeds, Staples Center is an excellent place for reporters to cover the news. Meanwhile, Kimmel will be on the stage, but the nominees will be at their own homes.

The Emmy Award was established by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, also known as ATAS in 1949. The ATAS extended the ceremony into a national event in 1950. After four years, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, also known as NATAS, formed as a sister organization to serve the East Coast members in 1955. Initially, there was only one Emmy event held per year to appreciate the national broadcast. Later in 1974, the Daytime Emmy ceremony started to honor the daytime programming. The NATAS and ATAS agreed to split due to some internal conflict in 1977. After that, ATAS holds the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards while the NATAS holds the Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards.

Stewart said that the 2020 ceremony would depend entirely on the comfort level of the people, and they have to find them. The nominated celebrities could be in their garden or at home, or even in a hotel. It doesn’t matter if they have to bring every nominee to live into the show. Also, to efficiently proceed with the whole award show without any issue, they would avoid using software like Skype, Zoom, or Google Meet. He added they are not making any Zoomies, they are trying to make Emmys. So one of the things they are trying to do is get the highest-end kit for the shoot according to the nominee’s comfort level.

Primetime Emmys

The Primetime Emmys are presented for excellence in American primetime television programming. The ceremonies are generally held in mid-September on Sundays. The show has broadcast partnerships among CBS, NBC, ABC, and FOX networks. Some awards are also presented to the behind the scenes crew like costume designers, cinematographers, art directors, casting directors, and sound designers. They are awarded by separate award Creative Arts Emmys, which are held a few days earlier than the actual ceremony.

The members of the ATAS ran and voted for the Primetime Emmys. The members vote for their respective categories around June to determine the nominees. And the winners are decided after the final voting in August.

Daytime Emmys

The Daytime Emmy Award is organized in May or June. The awards are presented in the excellence of American daytime television shows. Like the Primetime Emmys, the producer also organizes a separate Creative Arts Emmy ceremony for the behind-the-scenes crew in daytime television. The members of NATAS voted for the Daytime Emmys. The active members of NATAS who have national credits for two years in the last five years are eligible to judge. They nominate the artist respective to the category, and then winners are chosen from the nominations.

Sports Emmys

The members of the NATAS present the Sports Emmy Awards for excellence in sports programming. The award ceremony for the Sports Emmys takes place every Spring, usually in the last two weeks in April or the first week in May in New York City. The members of NATAS solicits who have significant experiences in national sports production can be the judge of the award show. Most of the categories in the ceremony only have a single voting round according to the score. The top five entries are announced as nominations, and the top entry among them is announced as the Emmy winner.
