Health Insurance in Dallas Faces Bad Look As Millions Cannot Afford Premiums

by DAVIS BROWN PRC Agency

Dallas health insurance and the thousands of Americans who were drawn to it during the COVID-19 pandemic ultimately lost out on coverage because they couldn’t pay for it. According to a report by bloomberglaw.com, a significant number of people who signed up for the Affordable Care Act between March and August couldn’t pay their initial premiums. As a result, many plans were never activated while others are still without coverage because of no payment. The thought is that the Affordable Care Act, despite its millions of proponents suggesting that it is the most comprehensive health care option out there, may not have the teeth to help families during a public health emergency.

Per the article, many states that offer their own Affordable Care Act exchanges have opened special enrollment periods outside the normal year-end window in response to COVID-19. In other states, individuals and families who are uninsured must wait until November. Regardless, the article states, “findings indicate many people can’t afford ACA coverage even though subsidies are provided for those with incomes between 100% and 400% of the poverty level.” As of Aug. 31, 21,316 people enrolled in ACA plans, but only 14,604 people paid initial premiums. Public attitudes nationwide, including those who have health insurance in Dallas, toward the Affordable Care Act shows that confidence is dwindling in the topsy-turvy world of a public health crisis.

Rick Thornton, a Dallas health insurance agent, reminds everyone that the COVID-19 crisis is something no one was prepared for, and that this is uncharted waters for our country and health insurance system as a whole. Lawmakers on both sides of the fence, including those who staunchly support ending the ACA, are studying additional subsidy programs that hopefully will address some of the issues regarding affordability.
