Healing Post Operational Emotional Scars

by Rohan Sinha Author
Emotional scaring after operations is a fact of life we tend to conveniently overlook. Many aren’t even aware that patients tend to get emotionally bruised during major health issues. Even after the first few initial days of low appetite and grumpy demeanour, some patients remain stuck in an emotional rut. Patients need every bit of moral and physical support to emerge out of their state of anxiety and fear and you may have to do more than say a few kind words.

What triggers post-operative depression?

Fear, anger, anxiety and sadness are some common emotions people feel after operations. At times the shock of feeling different after surgery triggers depression, other reasons may be a less than expected outcome of the surgery. Even reaction to painkillers or other drugs may cause depression.

Tell-tale signs of depression

The definition of depression states the condition as loss of interest and constant feeling of sadness. A whole gamut of emotions like irritation, depression, anger and despair are observed.  Loss of appetite is such a common manifestation of depression that we don’t even think twice about it before brushing aside as something that’s to be expected after operations.

Why hospitals don’t do anything about it

Most hospitals don’t do anything about it, but the good ones actually brief patients on what to expect after a major surgery.  Unfortunately the condition doesn’t trigger late after the patient has reached home. Once scars and other signs of a surgery become clearer depression sets in. Also, patients don’t really talk of their condition either. Especially elderly patients never talk of their feelings often attributing to a bad phase in life. Prolonged depression can quickly become a serious issue. Professional attention, though isn’t indispensable should be sought whenever you see the signs of it.

What to Do Before Seeking Professional Consultation

If someone you know is under the cloud at the moment, put in the effort to find the reason behind it. It could be more than medicines. Perhaps the patient is worried of his economic condition post-surgery, perhaps he is worried about work – there could be any number of reasons behind it. Once you understand the reason you can then address it better. Small gifts, cards and flowers are really helpful; do not ignore that at all.

Always consider additional help

After operations, patients need all the help they can get. Always consider bringing in professional nurses or care takers to help. Home nursing professionals know everything there is to offering professional care and with them around you will feel much confident that your parents or that special someone in your home is in good hands.
