For a territory that is so small, measuring a mere 6.7 square kilometres or 2.6 square miles, Gibraltar certainly packs in a lot of history. After all, this peninsula on the south Iberian coast has been inhabited for more than 50,000 years, and has been in British hands since the early 18^th century, when it was ceded to Great Britain in perpetuity under the Treaty of Utrecht.

A place that rewards the curious explorer

While you might not have much time to indulge your inner history buff during the wedding ceremony and reception itself, once all of the marriage formalities are done with, Gibraltar is a wonderful part of the world to explore for all manner of historic remnants.

You don’t even need to leave Main Street to discover the Convent, for example, which was built in 1531. It originally served as a residence for Franciscan friars, and retained its name when it became the official domicile of the Governor of Gibraltar in 1728.

Head to the northern end of the old town, meanwhile, and you’ll come across a building that you may initially assume to be a mosque, but which is actually the Moorish-revival style Holy Trinity Cathedral.

Other historical highlights for those contemplating Gibraltar for their wedding include the eighth-century Moorish Castle with its instantly recognisable Tower of Homage, as well as the Irish Town – with its elegant buildings largely dating from the early 19^th century – and St Michael’s Cave.

The latter is a series of limestone chambers and tunnels that was formerly used for defensive purposes by the Moors and Spaniards, and was even prepared for use as an emergency military hospital during World War II, although it was never ultimately used as such.
