New York is the city that never sleeps, it is a vibrant, bustling town where it is always possible to grab a drink and swap stories with your friends.  It is not the biggest city in America but it is probably one of the most famous.  Millions of tourists flock to New York every year to soak up the atmosphere and see the plethora of world famous sights; such as the Statue of Liberty.

However, whether you are visiting or live in this glorious city; there will be a time when you need to simply get away, unwind and take life at a slightly slower pace.  Thankfully, there are many destinations within easy reach if New York which will allow you to escape the hustle and bustle and explore a different way of life.  The following weekend breaks could, easily, be longer, if required:

1.       Phoenicia

This is a small hamlet just a short distance from New York City; but still within the state of New York.  It is sat at the bottom of Slide Mountain and has a charming, rustic feel which attracts both New Yorkers and others.  There is one main street and the small town is often host to art festivals.  It is also a great base to explore the surrounding area from; particularly if you enjoy hiking.

2.       Gloucester

This is an old fishing village situated approximately four hours drive away from New York City.  It is an old fashioned village where the pace is much slower although there is a thriving art scene and an excellent choice of restaurants and bars to enjoy the more relaxed pace of life.  It provides a wonderful opportunity to unwind for a few days.

3.       Honor’s Haven Resort & Spa

Just two and a half hour’s drive from New York is the Honor’s Haven Resort & Spa.  It sits in the Shawangunk Mountain region at the gateway to the famous Catskills Mountain Range.  An area which used to be famous for being home to some of the greatest holiday resorts of the 1950’s; one of which is rumoured to be the inspiration for the hit film ‘Dirty Dancing’.

Honor’s Haven Resort and Spa offers a full range of treatment facilities; including a stunning Jacuzzi pool, a swimming pool and a variety of relaxing massages and spa services.  It is the perfect destination for a couple, group of women or even a family break!  The facilities are first class and the two hundred acres of land the resort is sat in will provide anyone with ample possibilities.

New York Weekend getaways can be booked by visiting Honor's Havenand choosing the facility that appeals the most.

4.       Boston

This city is situated just a few hour’s drive up the coast from New York and promises a very different experience to New York City.  The city has a rich history and is well known for its connection with some of the greatest artists the world has ever seen.  It is a cultural hub and a modern, bustling city.

It may seem peculiar to leave New York City simply to visit a different city but the change of scenery can be extremely beneficial.  It also provides the opportunity to explore a different location and discover new facts and different cultural gems.

5.       Bear Mountain

This mountain can be reached in roughly the same amount of time it will take you to get from one side of the city to the other.  It is a world away from the hustle and bustle and will provide you with an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.  There are many hiking and biking trails across this landscape; all accompanied by some fantastic views, the opportunity to fish and even use the swimming pool or visit the zoo!

It is possible to visit this area as part of a day trip but more advisable to enjoy a few nights of escapism.

6.       North Folk

This has become a popular destination for those New York chef’s who are looking to slow the pace of life down slightly.  Consequently there are an abundance of excellent quality restaurants to choose from; many of the delicious dishes are made with locally caught, fresh seafood.  There is still a bustling, party like atmosphere but it is much more relaxed than New York City.  You can choose to simply relax or you may prefer to visit some of the local vineyards and breweries

7.       New London

Just two hour’s drive away from New York City is the seaport town of New London; it is situated in Connecticut and is reached via a short ferry ride from Block Island.  It has an abundance of historical facts, including a stunning exhibition building which was built by Captain Giles Harris; part of one of the biggest whaling families in the area.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from although Carmelo’s Bean & Leaf is worth a visit as it is one of the best places to see the locals and swap stories with them.

8.       The Hamptons

The Hamptons are just a few hours away from New York City by car or train.  They are situated on the tip of Long island and are well known as the place where wealthy New Yorkers visit and have summer homes.  As such, it is an expensive area but a beautiful area to experience.  There are numerous beaches to explore and a wide variety of small towns dotted within the farming community.

There are places to stay here which will not break your budget although many if the hotels, restaurants and bars cater for the more expensive end of the market.  This should not stop the area from being a place to visit and experience; even if only once in your lifetime.

Of course, it is also possible to fly anywhere you like in the United States to indulge in a luxury weekend break; the cost and ease of catching a plane now makes it possible to have a weekend getaway in the destination of your choice.  However, there is something to be said for the lack of schedule and ease of transporting yourself to your destination.
