Get a Healthy Flush with Natural Blush

by After Glow Cosmetics Best Organic Makeup Products

It’s natural to want a rosy glow for your daily look. What isn’t natural is the slew of synthetic FD&C and Lake dyes some cosmetic companies use to achieve a pop of color. Most traditional blushes (and even some “natural blushes”) will make you blush with the long list of synthetic chemicals they use. Make sure you aren’t sacrificing your health in the name of pretty pink cheeks. Choose natural blush for a safer, healthier flush.

3 Common Blush Ingredients to Avoid

Consider a switch to natural blush to avoid dangerous ingredients. It’s almost unbelievable what traditional cosmetic companies get away with putting in their makeup. Most consumers don’t realize that cosmetic products and ingredients do not need Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to enter the market. Regulations exist in the cosmetic industry, but companies remain largely in control. This results in many makeup products with dangerous ingredients. Your everyday blush could contain one of the following potentially harmful substances:

1.     Talc: Talc and talcum powder is what gives most traditional and some natural blushes their texture. Unfortunately, talc is a mineral that may contain asbestos, a known carcinogen. Studies have linked cosmetic talcum powder products to lung fibrosis, ovarian cancer, and mesothelioma. Even talc products that claim to be “asbestos-free” cannot guarantee zero contamination. While talc is a natural cosmetic ingredient and is found in many natural cosmetics, it’s advisable to avoid talc altogether in your blush to stay on the safe side.

2.     Alumina: Many brands incorporate alumina, a compound of aluminum and oxygen, to prevent caking in blushes. Yet this anti-caking agent is toxic according to the Environmental Working Group. This crystalline ingredient poses risks of bioaccumulation and organ system toxicity. Aluminum is a neurotoxin, and poses potential hazards in any makeup product.

3.     Coal tar dyes: Many blushes use coal tar dyes to achieve a desired color. These dyes makeup some of the most vibrant colors in makeup. Even cosmetic companies that claim to be safe and natural still can’t get away from the allure of these synthetic dyes. These may pop up on ingredients labels as “D&C Red 7 Lake,” “FD&C Yellow 5 Aluminum Lake,” or five-digit color index numbers. Coal tar is a hodgepodge of many different chemicals. Cancer.org claims they can cause cancer of the skin, lungs, bladder, kidneys, and digestive tract. The skin may absorb coal tar in blush and pose a risk to the wearer.

The list of potentially harmful elements in blush is long and while some of the ingredients are actually natural, they still fall on a spectrum of potentially irritating to possibly toxic. Check your labels for talc, alumina, coal tar dyes, parabens, preservatives, and bismuth oxychloride (found in some mineral makeup) before you buy. Beware that many natural blushes also sneak these verboten ingredients into their formulas. These substances may cause long-term health problems and skin irritation when applied in blushes and other cosmetic products. Play it safe by purchasing natural blush from a cosmetic brand you trust.

The Benefits of Natural Blush

Natural blush is a way to freshen your look without risking your health. A truly natural blush that is formulated to also eliminate potentially irritating natural ingredients, will not contain harmful or questionable chemicals. Instead, its ingredients label will look like a list of items you could eat. You may find ingredients such as iron oxide, titanium dioxide, rose oil, vitamin E, aloe, green tea, grapeseed oil, vitamins, pigments of different fruits and veggies, essential oils, and leaf extract in natural blush.

These items are not only safer alternatives to synthetic ingredients, they can help you achieve a great rosy glow. Thanks to the growing popularity of organic makeup, there are more natural blush options available to consumers than ever. You’re sure to find a natural product that looks just as good as – or better than – your current synthetic favorite. Blush without fear by choosing natural blush.
