Gary Burrell, With GPS, Help the Individuals to Find Their Way, Dies at 81

Gary Burrell founded Garmin with a fellow engineer, the navigational device organization whose products can prevent hikers from getting help insomniacs to track their sleep and got lost, direct pilots in fog, died on June 12 at his home in Spring Hill, Kan. He was 81.

His death was announced by the organization, which is based in Olathe, Kan. The cause was difficulties of Parkinson’s disease.

Mr Burrell (marked burr-ELL) was vice president of engineering for King Radio, an avionics organization that made navigational devices when he recruited Dr Min H. Kao from Magnavox, another defence contractor.

At the time, the management was opening up its Global Positioning System for the two men saw possibilities and civilian use.

In 1989, they shared their savings Dr Kao’s Taiwanese and persuaded relatives to invest seed money. Garmin — a connection of the partners’ first names — now has 13,000 employees at 60 sites around the world. Last year it reported revenue of more than $3.3 billion from selling GPS devices to aviation, automotive, marine, fitness, and outdoor recreation customers.

Garmin introduced the automatic pilot systems, GPS 100 Personal Navigator, sonar for anglers and a new hand-held navigator with tracking and two- way messaging. The organization expanded into wearable technology and cameras; one device can be automatic to let women monitor their menstrual cycle.

For a man whose career depended on endorsing the exact conflicting of the frustrated entreaty Get lost, Mr Burrell rarely invited the media to a sat still for interviews or a news conference.

Inside the organization, he practised what he called domestic leadership. As Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s chief executive and president and one of Mr Burrell’s first employees, clarified, whether it was about creating the best product or his behaviour as a leader Gary always reflected the impact to others before himself.

Gary Leon Burrell was born on 24 August 1937 in Wichita, Kan to Leslie and Ruth Burrell. His father was the lamp maker.

According to the Creek Community Church in Indian Olathe, Mr Burrell reinforced that Gary was 9 years old and gave his life to Christ at a Christian camp in the middle of a severe storm. For the rest of his life, his faith would play a central role in everything which he did.

He earned the bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wichita State.

He later worked at the Electronics of Lawrence, King and finally Allied Signal, into which King had been absorbed.

Dr Kao said Forbes magazine in 2003, that he would only start a company with me. They ran Garmin jointly as the chief executives and took the company public in 2000. Mr Burrell retired in 2002. He remained as co-chairman with Dr Kao until 2004, when he was named as chairman emeritus.

Forbes estimated in 2015 that Mr Burrell had a 14 per cent stake in Garmin and was worth $1.8 billion at the peak value of the company.

He is survived by his wife, Judith (Overholt) Burrell; their three sons, Jon, Randy, and Mike; and eight grandchildren.
