Garden of Salman Farsi and the Origin of Ajwah dates

by Ady Grewal Content writer
The Garden of Salman Farsi is located close to Masjid Quba. Salman Farsi (RA) was a slave likewise Bilal (RA) under the Jew of Banu Quraizah. Since he worked south of Madinah and because of the work access he could never attend the great expeditions such as Badar or Uhud.

The devotion for Islam was so overflowed in the heart of Salman Farsi that eventually, he asked his freedom cost to his Master. As his Master did not want to free him at any cost, regardless he said his condition of freedom 300 palm trees including exotic dates and forty ounces of gold just in one night. It means that was impossible.

And that day getting the opportunity he at once moved forward Madinah to seek the counsel of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as today several people make sure their presence in Madinah after proceeding hajj through cheap Hajj packages. When he described the condition for his freedom to the Prophet ﷺ, so meanwhile the Prophet ﷺ told him to write an agreement to meet the condition by paying the gold as well as growing of plant trees just in one night. After giving the suggestion to Salman Farsi (RA) he called Sahaba to help Salman both palm trees and gold. All the Sahabah arranged the Palm-shoots and then Prophet ﷺ said, “Go dig the holes for them Salman and tell me when thou hast done, and mine is the hand that shall put them in.”

Thus, the Sahaba helped Salman to dig up the holes and Prophet ﷺ planted each of three hundred Palm-shoots which all had taken root and thrived.

As for as the gold was concerned, so that had also been rendered in size of hen’s egg from one of them to the Prophet ﷺ. When it was given to Salman by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he said that the condition had been more than that. And Prophet ﷺ took it mouth and then gave to Salman saying that the weight of gold had increased. The next morning when Salman Farsi (RA) put the forty ounces before his Master he laughed and said that with the amount there was another condition of Palm trees including exotic dates.

Salman (RA) said to his Master that both conditions had been fulfilled. So, the incident was unbelievable for his Master when he saw the garden of Palm trees with unusual dates which is today known as Ajwah dates. Since that was planted by the own hands of Prophet ﷺ  so the Prophet ﷺ said about Ajwah dates, "If someone eats some 'Ajwa dates every morning, he/she will not be caused by poison or magic on that day till night." (Sahih Bukhari). And people who go for Hajj or Umrah through Authorized Agents certainly came back with Ajwah dates to gift their native people as Tabbaruk.

So, in that way master of Salman Farsi (RA) had to free him as all the conditions had been fulfilled.

After that Salman Farsi (RA) devoted his life for Islam and he gave the idea of digging a great trench around the city of Medina to defend the city and its people from the Quraysh army. So, the Messenger of Allah-Almighty Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Sahabah agreed and accepted Salman's plan because that was the striking idea to confront the Pagan Arab. In that way, the Battle of Trench was owed to the idea of Salman Farsi which was won by the Muslim Army.
