Friends Reunion is Postponed Again

The Friends reunion has again been delayed indefinitely. It was scheduled to be released around mid-August in the year 2020. But due to the global pandemic coronavirus disease- 2019, the project has been postponed with no fixed date. Sad! Isn’t it? After the series of Friends ended after the 10th season, it was hard to believe we could not have any more new friends episodes. And when the reunion was announced, since then, the fans are waiting for it to release. Friends is an American sitcom television show that started on 22nd September 1994. The show was created by Marta Kauffman and David Crane and starred six fantastic actors Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer. The whole series revolves around six friends in their 20s and 30s. The sitcom series built a strong fanbase of different age groups. When the final episode aired on 6th May 2004, it was watched by 52.5 million American audiences, which made it the most-watched episodic series of the 2000s. Friends were nominated for 62 Primetime Emmy Awards. It also won the award of Outstanding Comedy Series in 2002. It also ranked 24 on the Writers Guild of America’s 101 Best Written TV Series of All Time and ranked 28 on TV Guide’s 60 Best TV Series of All Time.

From this new project Friends reunion, all six of the stars of the show, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry were set to earn a pretty significant amount of $2.5 million each for the HBO Max special. The project was meant to tape before live viewers on the NBC comedy’s original somewhere in mid-March. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the production was halted, pushing the tape to launch on 27th May with HBO Max’s. But now the project has been indefinitely postponed, just revealed by Jennifer Aniston. She played the character of Rachel Green in the show.

The previous series ended after the tenth season in 2004. The story put a satisfying end to the lives of Monica, Chandler, Rachel, and Ross, and also to Phoebe’s stories. But Joey Tribbiani, played by Matt LeBlanc, left dry and high with no happy ending. The audiences want to know, what happened to Ross and Rachel after Friends, are they still together, or is everything okay with Chandler and Monica, and how Chandler is doing with two babies? And any manipulative plot would have been a betrayal of the characters’ arc of the show. Hence, the producer and director turned towards Matt LeBlanc’s Joey Tribbinani character because he had something left in the tank. The character had no happy ending, and he had also grown far less than the other. And watching him succeeding as an actor was a fascinating idea.

When the creators announced the Friends reunion, fans started speculating about the story and the characters’ life they would be going to watch. Questions like would Phoebe and Mike have children? Was Gunther okay about Rachel getting back to Ross? Did anyone remember Ben existed? Those questions were fun, but the answers might not offer satisfaction as it seemed to offer. Audiences had already witnessed that with Joey, the show tried to answer such speculations like Joey’s character could settle down, or could he make his career as an actor. But, things turned out differently, and the show made him a loser. No Friends fans wanted to see their favorite character Joey in such unfamiliar surroundings. However, everyone loved watching Joey’s role in Friends by watching him as the actor in Hollywood was not right. The same could happen with the Friends reunion, there would be a requirement of change in the life of characters after 16 years, and the unfortunate results could be the same.

The new project of Friends reunion is building great anticipation since the first news of the movie came out. And 2020 was the year every fan was waiting to finally know what is happening in the lives of their favorite characters. But when it was finally the time the pandemic spoiled it all. Jennifer Aniston said, “It is unfortunate we had to move the deadline again. It is not a safe time, period, to do this with live audiences. That’s the bottom line. It is not a safe time to do it.” She added, “There’s no denying the delay of the reunion is a huge bummer. But the good news is that it is still happening, it will just take a little longer. This has given the team and us more time to make it even more exciting.” Aniston said she would like to choose to see it as the half-glass full that it got postponed. She said, “Look, we are not going anywhere. And you guys are not going to get rid of Friends. You are stuck with us for life.” At the end of the interview, she concluded by saying, “I just want to get 2020 out and behind us.”

Her interview was a relief, and we do not want Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, or Phoebe to go anywhere. And also the reunion is still happening, just it is taking some time.
