Fresh Food in Azerbaijan

The fresh aroma of the newly-baked bread will fill you with a sense of longing as you silently sip in the fruit juice. This is a typical day in Azerbaijan as you sit in a tiny cafe outside the busy city of Baku. Azerbaijan cuisine boasts of fresh ingredients which are available locally with spices and herbs. There is a unique flavour of Azerbaijani cuisine which is also extremely nutritional. Meat of various kinds will feature prominently in any dish. Keeping with the extreme climactic conditions, the Azerbaijani people will have fresh fruits along with any meals.

A popular dish in Azerbaijan is pilaf. This is a rice dish, spiced with saffron and other local herbs and laden with stuffed meat. This is a wholesome dish and you will find different variations of Azerbaijani pilaf. Some are made with nuts or eggs, some are made with milk. Most pilaf dishes are accompanied with sorbet which is made out of fresh fruits and juices. Tea is also mixed with this juice.

If you visit Azerbaijan, you cannot miss the succulent kebabs. Mostly the meat is flavoured with spices and herbs, at times sour herbs and cooked over a tandoor grill. Another famous dish which might suit your palate is Dolma, where the meat is minced and cooked by wrapping it with grape leaves. Azerbaijani fast food or kutab is also famous. It is a thin patty filled with meat and fried and serves hot with sauces. A lot of regions in Azerbaijan have different cuisines. If you plan to visit any of these regions, check your visa to Azerbaijan, so that you are not in trouble at any point of time.
