Four Tips to Keep Your Lawn Looking Beautiful
by Kevin Smith AuthorYou’ve redone your entire yard, front to back. You have a beautiful
green lawn free of dandelions and nicely sculpted curved landscape beds with
flowers and shrubs. But to keep your yard with the nice landscape design in
Alpharetta the pride and joy of the neighborhood you have to maintain it. Here
are four things to do every spring and through the summer to keep your yard in tip
top shape.
#1 – Fertilize every early spring. Consult with your local lawn
and garden center on the best type of fertilizer for your area. Most
fertilizers come in pellet form and can be applied to a lawn with a handheld or
wheel spreader. A lawn grows and stays green as it interacts with nutrients in
your soil. But over time soil naturally loses nutrients. Fertilizers replenish
those nutrients adding phosphorous, nitrate, and potassium. In fact, your lawn
feeds fertilizer as it needs sunshine and water.
#2 – Aerate your lawn every year. Aeration creates small holes in
the soil to allow air, nutrients, and water to reach down to the roots of your
grass. A healthy lawn as deep healthy roots. The deeper the roots the stronger
the lawn. Aeration lessens soil compaction. When soil has become compacted
there are too many solid particles. A rule of thumb on if you need to aerate is
if your lawn gets heavy use with lots of people and objects moving over the
lawn. The best time to aerate is during early spring.
#3 – Mow frequently on the highest setting of your lawn mower. If
you don’t enjoy mowing the grass, you’re tempted to set the mower on its lowest
setting to give you a few weeks between mowing. But you are cutting away the
healthy part of the grass stalks. If you cut too low, experts say you can shock
the grass. If you mow to low your lawn will have a light green tint. Cutting on
the highest setting will give your lawn a dark green look.
#4 – Edge every few weeks. Nothing looks better than a nice deep
edge between the sidewalk and the edge of your lawn. This is the finishing
touch on a well-cared for lawn. If you do not edge grass regularly, with time
it grows over onto the sidewalks and edges of the driveway. The longer you wait
to edge, the more difficult it will be to cut through the grass buildup. The
less expensive option is to buy a push edger. This is what people used before
the invention of electric and gas-powered lawn and garden equipment. If you go
this route, you’ll want to edge after every mow because it’s your muscle that
pushes through the grass overgrowth. Or you can purchase a powered edger.
Following these four tips will help keep your yard with the nice landscape
design in Alpharetta looking its best year after year.
