Four Tips to Ensure You Select the Right Contractor

by Kevin Smith Author

Hiring a contractor can be a daunting task. How do you know who is reputable? Who will do a good job? How can you minimize risk? If you are looking to hire contractors in Acworth for any painting, carpentry or construction work, make sure you follow these four tips before you hire anyone.

Check Experience

Starting out is great and maybe that is the type of contractor you want. While giving someone a shot is admirable, it runs the risk that they do not know what they are doing or worse, will not realize they do not until the job is beyond recovery. Make sure the company you hire has at least one employee with a decent amount of experience who will be working on your job or supervising other workers. You also may want to make sure that the supervisor, whomever it is, will routinely visit the site to keep the team on track.

Check References

Ask the company for “real people” references of recent projects they have completed. The references should not all gush over the contractor as no one is perfect. As a character test, ask the contractor or estimator about a project that ran amok because of a mistake they made. Their answer will tell you a lot about their honesty, forthrightness and whether they can own up to a mistake.

Plus, a contractor who gives an honest answer is likely someone you can trust to play it straight with you if the project experiences problems or if there is unforeseen issues that were not reflected in the estimate. You also will likely get a good laugh over the story as well.

Ask Questions

You are hiring a contractor because they can provide you a service and likely and end product that you cannot provide yourself. They possess the skills, experience and know-how to get the job done. You need, though, to know what their plan is. Do not get into minute details (that is just annoying,) but ask about the type of materials they will use.

Get It in Writing

Make sure to get your estimate in writing. Handshakes allegedly worked in the 1800’s. This is not the 1800’s. A written estimate protects them from you and you from their work if they do not live up to the estimate.

Hiring contractors in Acworth requires a bit of research and patience to make sure you get the right company for the job. By using these four criteria to select and set up your contractor, you can rest assured you have done all you can to choose the right person and company for your project.
