Fitting in Better: The Complicated Relationship between Fashion and Posture

by Ben Goodman ***

When was the last time you fit a dress at a store and find it just as good when you wore it at home? If your answer is somewhere between “long ago” and “never” then you also probably suffer from bad posture.

Yes, believe it or not, your posture could be the main reason why your dress doesn’t look like it fits well. Most of the time, people tend to fit a certain article of clothing for the first time with their good posture, that’s why the clothes tend to look like they perfectly fit your body.

Your dress didn’t shrink on your way home and the sales lady didn’t swap it into a smaller size either. However, your body did change. Upon slipping out of the fitting room, you abandoned your proper posture and slumped your body forward with your bad posture, which caused your dress to look tight.

Saving Posture and Saving the Dress

The love-hate relationship between fashion and posture has been ongoing since time immemorial. As reported by Vogue, the fashion world’s interpretation of slouching ping ponged between being a fashion “No-no” to “a high fashion trademark”.

Whether we admit it or not, high fashion is different from every day wear. There is nothing inherently wrong with using high fashion pieces for your everyday wear. But regardless of whether in the fashion run way, or in a busy city street, clothes look best when the person wearing it has good posture.

A person who maintains good posture looks smarter, healthier, happier and 10 pounds lighter. So how can you save your posture (and the dress you just bought)?

1.       1. Pull yourself up

One popular trick for maintaining good posture is imagining a string pulling you up, like that of a marionette. This trick is especially helpful if you want to maintain proper posture while walking or standing still.

2.       2. Eat healthy

Did you know that more than messing with your muscles and spine, bad posture has been linked to increased risk in certain types of cancer and depression? Your posture can literally kill you so it’s important to gear up and start protecting yourself. Make sure to eat more greens and incorporate fruits to your diet for a healthier body.

3.       3. Try ergonomic chairs

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a yoga chair, executive chair, or a simple comfortable office chair, what’s more important is that it’s capable of properly supporting your back while you spend hours at work.

Although it admittedly sounds like a lot of dedication and a lot of effort, saving your posture (and your new dress) means changing your lifestyle. At the end of the day, its benefits also extends beyond just saving the new dress you just bought to promote overall wellness and health.

Try fitting your dress once more in front of your mirror. But this time, make sure to have proper posture, and try not to go back to your slumping posture even after slipping out of the dress. Look smarter, healthier and slimmer by maintaining good posture today.
