Finding the Right Faucet for Your Bathroom
by Yoel Piotraut Managing PartnerFaucets are
the bathroom details that can spell the great difference between a moderate
bathroom design and truly functional one. But you should avoid choosing a
faucet solely on its looks. Functionality, durability and comfort are the key
factors you should consider also.
Choose the types of faucets.
Are you
retrofitting a new faucet to an existing sink in your bathroom? Or buying a
complete sink ensemble? Whatever the reason behind your purchase decision, you
should make a choice so that the faucet matches the hole-opening in your sink.
Here are some of the bath faucets available for sale:
Single-hole faucets –
Generally,
these faucets combine the spout and mixing handles – a single level. They need
only a drilled sink hole. For retrofitting purposes, some models come with a
bottom plate that covers the existing three-hole openings.
However, single-hole faucets are perfect options to go for smaller sinks like powder room baths. Their simplicity in design brings in modern sensibilities to overall bathroom décor.
Centre-set
faucets –
They fit standard three-hole sinks (in which the outer holes drilled
around 4 inches). These faucets will have either a single level or two handles
that are mounted on a 6-inch plate. The centre-set faucets are ideal for most
bathroom sinks.
Wall-mount
faucets –
The faucets have been popular options for freestanding or vessel-type
sinks. Usually, they require longer spouts extending very well over the top of
the bowl.
Widespread
mounts –
Widespread mounts feature with three pieces – two handles and a spout.
Both the handles are around 8 inches apart and the three pieces are quite
larger than other available bath faucets. However, the smaller models are known
as minispread and are designed for standard holes that are drilled 4 inches apart.
Choose the style of faucets.
After all,
there are no such hard and fast rules about combining a vintage style faucet
with a classic sink or a contemporary faucet with a modern sink. Generally, the
closer combination of faucet styles offers the more appealing effect on the
overall design.
·
The
traditional designs include crossbar handle faucets which are available in
brass or chrome. However, the ceramic covered lever faucets give an
old-fashioned appeal. If you want an alternative to chrome and brass finishes,
you can give your classic styled faucet a contemporary look with a matte finish
like satin nickel.
·
If
you need more transitional look that blends classic and modern styles, a
gooseneck matte-finish faucet is perfect option to go for. It maximizes the
available space for hand washing purposes.
·
Modern
faucets generally come with smooth, minimalist design and a polished finish.
The levers that help in operating water flow are often slim and sleek to look
at.
Consider the pricing.
When you
shop for bath faucets, you’ll get to choose from traditional two-handle models
that come with century old designs to the latest one handle designs that look
like modern sculptures.
The prices
range from $60 to $1000 or more. Typically, solid brass die cast parts sign
quality; but come with steep price tags - $250 to $1,000 or more.
Again, if
you need less expensive faucets, you should be careful about the models with
plastic handles or shells. However, the prices may seem attractive; but their
durability and resistance to scratches are going to disappoint you for sure.
Choose the faucet finishes.
Faucets
available today are considered as investments as well as decorative
preferences. If you are confused, you should follow the below discussed
decision making suggestions:
·
Instead
of considering the metal type, start focusing on the overall look. Visit a
showroom before your NYC bathroom remodeling in person and check out all the
finishes that are on the display. Choose the one that you fall in love with.
·
Coordinate
all finishes in every bathroom so that the hard surfaces like towel bars, door
hardware and lighting fixtures have the same finish.
·
Polished
finish looks beautiful and elegant; but need regular upkeep to maintain their
sparkling shine.
·
Go
for bruised finishes, if you want to hide fingerprints and water spots. They
are great options, if you have kids.
