Fibroadenoma Lump in Breast

Fibroadenoma is defined as the benign tumour of the breast. The most common symptoms of fibroadenoma is a lump is found in the breast. It is composed up of both glandular and fibrous tissue. The size ranges from 1-3 cm, smooth, movable under the skin.

Most commonly occur in the women under the age of 30,or during pregnancy and breast feeding period.

Cause of fibroadenoma - the exact cause of fibroadenoma in not known but it may be due to the sensitivity to the hormone oestrogen and family history of having fibroadenoma or it may be due to high intake of oral contraceptive pills. It may shrink of its own during menopause to to low level of oestrogen.

Types of fibroadenoma -

1.Simple fibroadenoma - usually 1-3 cm in size and remain same all over. It does not increase the risk of breast cancer.

2.Giant fibroadenoma - more than 5 cm are referred to as giant Fibroadenoma.

3.Juvenile Fibroadenoma - these are usually seen in teenage girls.

Sign and symptoms -

1.Usually 1-3 cm in size.

2.Firm, smooth or rubbery

3.Movable under the skin

4.Painless

Diagnosis - it is done by

-physical examination

-Mammography

-Breast biopsy
