Facts About Psilocybin Mushrooms

Psilocybin is a compound found in wild or home grown mushrooms to induce psychedelic effects. These mushrooms are gilled and can be found worldwide.  A liquid version of psilocybin can be found in the mushroom known as liberty cap. It is brown and clear. The mushroom with the most psychedelic effects is known as psilocybe azurescens. It has 1.8% psilocybin, 0.5% psilocin, and 0.4% baeocystin. There are around 19 different kinds of psilocybe mushrooms. The psilocybin tryptamine in the mushrooms is what causes any psychedelic effect. It raises the bodies serotonin levels and can be found in the liberty cap type of mushroom.

By ingesting a mushroom with psilocybin one can become intoxicated. Perceptions, moods and even a person’s consciousness may be affected. It is considered a hallucinogenic causing a person’s reality to change perceptually. This may include hearing noises, seeing things that aren’t there and even feeling things physically. Psilocybin changes in the body to affect serotonin levels that in turn can produce hallucinations and unreal perceptions of things. To counteract the effects of a psilocybin mushroom it is best to be in a quiet room. If at the hospital, a person may be sedated with benzodiazepine. The doctors may also administer antipsychotic drugs to prevent violence from hallucinations. This drug can also cause a mild side effect like ingestion or more serious like tachycardia. Some people who have used psilocybin have claimed to have flashbacks which are feelings and sensations that come from the drug after the effects have worn off. It is impossible to know the amount of psilocybin in any mushroom because all of the mushrooms have a different amount of the psychedelic components. Therefore, it is hard to predict the length and strength of an episode when it is ingested. An episode can be mild including feeling euphoric or peaceful to strong seeing hallucinogens and maybe even causing death. In 1958 Doctor Albert Hofmann was the first to document psilocybin and lysergic acid diethylamide or more commonly known as LSD. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has classified psilocybin as a Schedule I drug. It has been shown through studies that psilocybin can have a positive effect on distress, depression, anxiety caused by cancer, addiction to cigarettes and abusing drugs. It is used sometimes in therapy although this is not widely accepted.

Another study was of 886 mushrooms was done to determine if they actually included psilocybin. The laboratory that did this study found that only 252 or 28% of the mushroom contains psilocybin. 275 or 31% of the mushrooms tested had traces of lysergic acid diethylamide LSD a phencyclidine PCP and these were found in stores. 328 or 37% of the mushrooms tested had no psilocybin, LSD or PCP in them at all.
