Construction of this mosque began in the late 8th century with building materials that were brought from the Visigothic and Roman structures. By the beginning of the 11th century, it had grown to its present size with the prayer hall containing more than 19 aisles.

During your time spent in Spain, you can also visit the Prado Museum located in the central part of the Spanish capital, Madrid. It has one of the finest collections of European art in the world that date back to the period between the 12th and 20th centuries. This museum was founded in the early 19th century as a museum of sculpture and paintings. Besides the vast collection of artworks and historical documents, it also has numerous paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints. Among the best-known works displayed in this museum is a 17th-century painting by Diego Velazquez, called Las Meninas.
