Explaining The Process Of Negotiation

by Devendra Kumar Article
Many times, a person is faced with a situation where he/she is expected to make a successful negotiation. These situations can arise in both the professional as well as the personal front. If you can negotiate through the differences easily, you can gain overall success in life. The first thing you need to do, as a negotiator, is to learn the art of analyzing the specific problem. You should be able to determine the interests of both the parties to work towards it. You need to see the issue, know the parties and what the intended goals of both the parties are. Unless you don’t understand the main issue on both the ends, you won’t be able to settle the negotiation. Here is what you should do next in order to master the art of negotiation and polish your negotiation skills.

Prepare Smartly
Once you’ve analyzed the problems on both the sides, the next step you need to take is to prepare for the negotiation. You need to be prepared for the meeting with both the sides or with the other party if you are representing a specific organization as the negotiator. While preparing for the meeting, you need to understand the issues, the goals, the alternative solution, or the extent to which the goal can be negotiated. You also need to study the past negotiation records of the company as well as the person with whom you are negotiating to determine an alternative goal.

Discussing The Problem
Once you are prepared, you can head to the negotiation meeting to discuss the terms of negotiation. You need to put forwards your side of the argument and also actively listen to the other party’s argument to find the right solution. You need to question the other party at any doubt you have to get a clear idea of their goal. In case of disagreements, you should patiently listen to the other person’s take on the argument so that you can proactively find a solution.

Clarifying The Goals
Once the discussion is over, you need to settle down peacefully and get a clear view on you as well as the other party’s goals. Clarifying the goals is very important to successfully settle a negotiation. Otherwise, you might cause loss to either of the two sides. Misunderstandings may crop up which may refrain you from reaching a beneficial outcome with negotiation.

Negotiating For A Win-Win Result
Once you have a clear idea of the goals of either side, it’s now your turn to come to a negotiation that would be a win-win situation for both the parties. Like if you are the employer and have to negotiate the salary of the candidate, you need to understand what the candidate’s expectation is and what the salary limit of the company is. You should also look at the skills and talent of the candidate and the requirement of manpower in the company. Keeping all this in mind, you can come up with a negotiated salary that would be acceptable by both your company as well as the candidate.

Negotiation skills training is an important training that almost every person should take in order to settle any differences peacefully. So find an institute near you and get your Negotiation Skills Training right away.
