Traditional dress of Kashmir is well-known for their embroidery and intricate designs, which reflects the richness of the culture and landscape of the region. The form of clothing is designed to counter the cold climate of the region.

The Kashmiri dress for women be it Muslim or Pandit is approximately the same. But there is a difference in their jewelry. Where most women in India have sarees as their traditional dress, Kashmiri women have a completely different style. Hindu women wear long Pherans stretching up to their feet with narrow sleeves clothes that are turned on the bottom side. 

Kashmiri women wear a brightly colored scarf or Taranga. Without a scarf, any outfit is incomplete. The Pherans worn by the Muslim women have broad sleeves that reach up to the knees. Neck region of the Pherans has floral patterns and various embroideries. They wear a headgear that looks very different from the Taranga. 

The headgear is in red color, which they tie around their forehead like a Turban, and they also use pins to tie it tightly. The traditional headgear is made of fine wool and is thick, keeping people warm in extremities of winter climate in Kashmir.

Pherans are centurial as they are worn by Kashmiris over the centuries and not only in winters. It shows a sign of self-effacement and self-consciousness. Summer Pherans is made up of light fabrics to counteract outside heat.

Traditional jewellery of Kashmir for man is a Khan Dress popularly known as Pathani Suit topped with a short Sadri (waist coat) along with skullcap and a close-fitting shalwar in Muslims or churidars pajama in Pandits.

The Pheran is a loosely fitted woolen garment adorned with Kangri which is is an earthen vessel that is filled with flaming coal to resist outer cold.

Jiggni

Jiggni is worn on the forehead by Kashmiri women. It is usually triangular or circular in shape. It is made up of gold and is fringed with hanging pearl and gold leaves.
Halqaband Halqaband is a traditional tight choker worn around the neck. It is usually made up of gold and has interlocking sections joined together with thread. The tribal Kashmiri chokers are famous for their design.

Dejihor

Dejihor is worn by every Pandit woman to show respect to her marriage. Dejihor is a dangle earring that hangs from the upper portion of the ear. It is believed to have been designed by the great Kashmiri Acharyas to infuse divine strength in married women. This is one of the highly used jewelry of Kashmir.

Gunus

Gunus is a thick gold bangle worn in the wrist. Its design has been inspired by wildlife as it has the head of snake or lion at both ends.

Sondus or Branshil

This ornament symbolizes marriage. Sondus or Branshil is an ornament given by a mother to her daughter and is mostly worn by Ladakhi women. This piece of jewelry is fixed on the left shoulder and has long silver strands that link a few gold discs.
