Apple has released the public beta of iOS 14 for iPhone and iPadOS 14 for iPad. This new version is a great mix of various features and people are finding it very comfortable to use. Apple made a long list of changes with this new version and being honest except the big changes in the iPhone’s home screen, none of the OS offers any big change in the way your iPhone or iPad works now. But these small modifications are so much that it seems like Apple didn’t say no to any suggestions.

The New iPhone Home Screen

Apple has allowed the three big features in its home screen and definitely, it is quite a big deal for it. Some are even saying that Apple has borrowed the idea from Android phones, which is true but the good part is, at last, Apple has allowed customizations in its home screen. The big features are:

  • Finally, after a long wait, Apple has introduced a widget feature that is available on iOS, iPad, and macOS. Now on iPhone, you can place the widgets anywhere on the grid and any home screen. Users can build Stacks of these widgets and can flip through them, or choose Smart Stacks which will arrange your widgets according to relevance.
  • Now, you can have app icons in multiple places on your iPhone. The new App Library feature is where all the icons of your apps will appear and will be auto-categorized by Apple. Therefore you can clear all the junk apps you don’t even use.  However, there is no option in the App Library to recategorize the apps. Also, you don’t even get the option of moving the apps around the screen.
  • You can set your home screens for particular tasks by moving to the overview mode and unchecking the pages. You can choose to show or hide them. As you cannot have app icons in more than one place in your home screen, this feature is therefore of hardly any use.

The Apple Pencil Stays In Your Hand More

Apple has introduced a new Scribble feature for iPad which has a stylus called Apple Pencil. Apple says that users can now enter text promptly into any text space using the Apple Pencil. Though other devices have also done this sort of thing, there is a separate box for handwriting recognition.

All you need to do is put the point of the Apple Pencil in any text space and start writing as you usually do. Users don’t even need to worry about keeping the writing inside the field. As they start writing, the iPad recognizes that, and then you can move anywhere around the screen as you write.

It takes half a second to detect your writing which can be a bit frustrating. However, it’s impressive that Apple can recognize even the worst of handwriting.

But at times if you have to fix a mistranscription, you will have to encircle the word to select it or scratch it to erase it which is a little complicated. This feature works particularly amazing for short text. Also, now you can write on Apple Notepad and select text from your handwriting to copy them as normal text and paste them anywhere. Hence, it is very easy now to write notes with an Apple Pencil as you can get the text out to any place you want. Though it’s not something new and Samsung’s Galaxy Note did it last year but still it’s a great new feature for Apple.

Compact UI And Universal Search

The new iOS won’t show you one screen at the top of the other and this is something amazing. With its new compact UI, Apple will now let apps show their screen on top of other apps’ screens without covering the whole screen.

Now your incoming calls will appear as a specialized notification at the screen top rather than covering the whole screen. The same will be with the third-party VOIP apps. The apps will appear as Picture-in-Picture windows which can also be resized. A new compact Siri is also there on iPhone and iPad which appears as a tiny multicolored bubble at the bottom of the screen.

The best thing about the compact UI feature is the latest search bar. Now it lets you type in apps, documents, and web searches. Then it searches and filters down every letter you input which is much faster and better.

Everything Else

This section includes all the small features Apple has added to its new version out of which the most prominent is its privacy features. Now your apps will request permission for some specific types of tracking, and now app makers will have to present an RDA nutritional data-style fact sheet stating all sorts of privacy policies the app offers. Every time an app looks at your clipboard, you will get a pop-up warning. Along with this, Safari will now show a report of all the trackers it has prevented. Apple’s super-advanced Intelligent Tracking Prevention framework will dig deeper than Chrome to stop tracking on the web.

Other various features include voice recognition, enhanced Memoji, better clock style, faster camera shots, and much more. This amazing new version of the iPhone and iPad will probably change the way we have always pictured them to be.
