Estonia welcomes Singapore businesses
by Andrew ChenDuring his visit to Singapore this week, Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip welcomed Singapore incorporated businesses to explore opportunities with Estonia and to use it as an entry point to as well as a base for Europe and Russia. The former Soviet nation which entered the European Union in 2004, is now the 14th freest economy and 17th easiest place to do business in the world. It is also the fastest growing economy in Europe and has the lowest sovereign debt in the EU.
Prior to this meeting, Singapore and Estonia have shared good bilateral relations. According to the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet deemed Singapore as Estonia’s most important economic partner in South-East Asia and recognized it as an international innovation and advanced technology hub. Although the EU-Singapore FTA has not been concluded yet, both countries have made concerted efforts to strengthen trade relations. In 2010, both Estonia and Singapore made preparations for an agreement to protect investments between the two countries as well as to foster deeper synergies in the science and technology industry.
