The healing effects of essential oils extracted via steam distillation of the fragrant parts of plants have been long known. Owing to their umpteen benefits and ease of use, they are popular among self-care practitioners and enthusiasts. However, even when using the best essential oils at home, it pays to stay cautious and indulge in best practices in order to reap the most benefits and avoid unsavoury experiences. Here are a few definitive ways to heighten your aromatherapy experiences with essential oils.

 

Choose A Location: A large, well ventilated room is preferred, but avoid using a diffuser directly under a fan or in direct sunlight. Since water is used in the diffuser, it is recommended to lay down a towel to avoid any spillage.

 

Setting Up The Diffuser: Add enough water in the diffuser. Clean, tap water that is room temperature is preferred. Most diffusers have a marking on the water container indicating the maximum water level that is to be poured. If no such marking is present, you can look into the users manual. Either way, you should not over fill the diffuser, which will reduce its effectiveness.

 

Add Oils: The next step is to add the essential oils. Since these oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, a few drops should suffice. Anywhere between 3-10 drops of oil should be used, and no more. Generally, around 6 drops of oils is enough for a session, but if you need a stronger scent, you can add a few more drops.

If you are looking to use a blend of oils, you can add different oils proportionately in the diffuser.

 

Turn On The Diffuser: Different types of diffusers operate differently. The most commonly used diffuser is the ceramic one, which has a shallow dish to contain water. Add a few drops of the requisite essential oil and light the candle underneath.

Electric diffusers available these days offer a better control over the diffusion operations. These can be programmed to turn on and off automatically in intervals of 15-30 seconds, depending on how strong you want to aroma.

Lavender Essential Oil: Offers a calming, relaxing scent which is good for sleep, reducing anxiety and restlessness.
