Essentials for becoming an accomplished Civil Engineer

Civil engineers have been accounted for one of the most important disciplines of engineering. They work towards conceiving the idea, developing the design, building the structure, supervising its improvement, operating the multiple departments, constructing and maintaining the infrastructure projects in the public and private sector. There are many civil engineering colleges in Kerala offering a wide range of knowledge about the whereabouts of this field. These may include the roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges to name a few. 

Primary Duties of Civil Engineers:

• Analyse plans, survey reports and other data required to plan and design projects

• Consider the construction costs, government regulations and potential environmental hazards along with many other factors during the planning and risk-analysis stages of a project

• Supervise and analyse the results of soil testing to determine the strength of the foundation

• Compile and submit all the necessary permit applications to local, state, and federal agencies, verifying the projects’ compliance

• Prepare cost estimates for materials, equipment’s and labour to determine a project feasibility

• Analyse the test results of building materials, such as concrete, etc.

• Use the design software to plan and design transportation systems and other structures in line with government standards

• Supervise the surveying operations to establish site location, layouts, etc. to guide the construction process

• Manage the maintenance of the infrastructure

Civil engineers work on complex projects and they attain satisfaction only when their project reaches completion.  They could either of the following:

• Construction engineers - manage construction projects, ensuring their schedule and built in accordance with plans. They are responsible for the design and safety of temporary structures used during construction. 

• Geotechnical engineers - focus on how structures are built 

• Structural engineers - design major projects to ensure their strength and durability

• Transportation engineers - plan, design, operate and maintain everyday systems

Department of Civil Engineering at Saintgits was established way back in 2004 when only a few colleges were offering Civil Engineering. Amongst many civil engineering colleges in Kerala offer three programmes, one bachelor and two sought-after masters programmes, affiliated to Kerala Technological University (KTU) and APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University B Tech Civil Engineering programme offered by Department is accredited by NBA (National Board of Accreditations) as recognition of the continuous efforts of Department towards maintaining quality standards in education. Department is one among the only six in Kerala that offers NBA accredited B Tech programme in Civil Engineering. Additionally, accreditation by the Institution of Engineers (India) is an acknowledgment of our commitment to keeping high professional standards in education.
