Error Handling Tips from Design Experts at an Atlanta-based Web Design Company

by Harvey S. Freelance writer.

Contrary to what industry-outsiders might say, error handling forms a crucial part of the overall user experience. Errors can occur when user operations become incompatible, when an app is unable to establish connections with the server, and when a user’s request cannot be processed. An error state is encountered at such stages.

If not dealt with properly, errors can cause users to desert apps or websites as they feel annoyed by badly-designed error states- said the leader of the design team at the Atlanta-based web design company.

The following tips will help all rookie as well as veteran designers design better error states and handle errors like pros:

  • The smartest thing to do in this respect is to be aware of the areas which are more prone to errors in order to reduce the possibility of their occurrence. Web designers need to bypass those areas and prevent error occurrence by providing suggestions, using constraints and by keeping a flexible approach in the web or app design.

  • Similar to the occurrence of the problem, error messages should appear dynamically with the purpose of reporting the problem to the user.

  • With the display of the error state, no inputs entered by the user should be affected. The app/website should not remove or destroy anything that has been uploaded by the user.

  • The language of the error message should be comprehensible by the users reading it; the message should clearly state the source and reason of error in simple, non-technical terms. Ideally, it should also include what needs to be done by the user to fix the problem.

  • Message should not be dramatic as the actual intend of an error message is to inform users about a problem without confusing or shocking them.

  • Unless for very critical issues, the users should have the ability to interact with the error-free parts of the remaining app or website. Taking over the control of a system is not a feasible solution of an error.

  • Error messages with some humor (not forced) can help in adding a human element to the app or website. A funny and cleverly crafted error page can increase UX points of any online platform.

  • Using good visuals in the form of colors and images can make the prospect of encountering errors online less annoying. Using red for the error message, yellow for warning messages and green to denote success of an operation help to make errors more natural.

With correct implementation of these tips, web designers can create much better apps or websites and reduce bounce rates just like the designers at the aforementioned web design company in Atlanta.
