Enterprise App or a Private App Store: Your Way?

by Sakshi Sharma Mobility Strategist
Private apps stores are gaining credence, with almost a quarter of all enterprises slated to have one by 2017, reports Gartner. Further, it projects stronger proliferation of ‘consumerization of IT’ leading to a greater buildup of ‘bring your own device’ (BYOD), and ‘bring your own app’ (BYOA) employees.

Enterprises today favor the apps leverage but are weary of their lack of control over public apps stores. That sets off the need for something that’s more closely tied up with the business, without curbing employees in their access to in-house apps.

Even if an organization hasn’t explicitly adopted BYOD and BYOA, its own corporate landscape, in all likelihood, shall grow complex given the readiness of employees and corporate operatives to include smartphones and tablets for work. In fact, firms already readily tout dedicated apps frameworks for most external, and at times, even internal engagement.

An in-house apps store is a great leverage in such fragmented mobile landscape. It can serve a one-stop solution to your corporate demands, internal and external. You can have apps exclusively catering to particular groups, designations, hierarchies, devices, or operations.

Even if most of your apps are consumer-facing, your private in-house apps store can be used a checkpoint before launching on apps stores. You can have the app in beta put up, ask employees to download, test, and post their feedback in-store.

Before pushing out to apps stores, you can have the beta version taken off or limited to selective access.
Firms like IBM and Barclays lead on the front. While IBM started off in 2011, Barclays had an internal app store deployed which allows its staff to carry out business activities and network with one another. The store is open to various layers of the organization, including customer-facing staff.

The store is managed centrally, with a strong firewall. Only verified tablet and smartphone devices get to access the store. Any device seeking access needs to first register with the network, and authenticated. The system also tracks down every device a download is made from.

All the data gets stored in the Cloud. Whenever a need to pull out or re-install a solution arises, it is easily managed with basic web services.

BYOD and BYOA are great business leverage, particularly in the light of the massive device adoption. However, it can be extremely challenging to press on with limited technical support.
