Electric heaters are economical, convenient and are extremely good at heating up a small space. And these days, they have become very common in households the world over. But just like any other electrical appliance, electric heaters also come with a few hazards. # The Danger of an Electrical Shock

Since these heaters run on electricity, there is always a risk of getting an electrical shock due to negligence. One must keep in mind that electric heaters are meant to be kept at a place, where there is no moisture and no chance of the heater coming in contact with water or other forms of spilled liquid. Therefore, never keep an electric heater in your kitchen, bathroom or any such place where there is a high probability of the heater coming in contact with moisture, water or spilled liquids to avoid accidental electrical shocks.

# Risk of Burns

Some parts of these heaters are known to become very hot and coming in contact with these parts can result in serious burns and injuries. Also, clothes could catch fire if exposed to these parts, increasing the risk exponentially. This is especially true in the case of small children and pets, as they have no way of knowing that they could be hurt or even end up seriously injured. Therefore, always ensure that you are closely monitoring children and pets while using these heaters to avoid any such instances from occurring.

# Fires

Electric heaters can result in fires in the house as a direct result of circuit overload or papers, cloths or other such combustible items coming within close proximity of the heater. In a typical house, multiple electrical appliances run on the same circuit and this could result in a circuit overload. Make sure, that you are not running multiple appliances at the same time to avoid overloading a circuit. Also, make sure to place the electric heater at a place where there are less chances of the heater coming in contact with any object that can easily catch fire.

Even though electric heaters come with their own set of risks, they are still better compared to the old fuel-burning heaters because they don’t release harmful fumes and gas. Just ensure that you check your heater every time you intend to use it for possible frayed wires, dust accumulation on the grates and grills to avoid sparks. And if your heater has become too old, I would advise that you get a new heater.
