E-Cigarette Flavors: the verdict

by Terry Andy Exclusive Discount Codes, Vouchers

In 2003 a new alternative to smoking appeared – e-cigarettes.

Smoking had been known for its highly injurious tendencies for quite some time and over a hundred chemicals found in cigarette smoke had been labeled as harmful. So when this new alternative popped up, smokers and non smokers alike embraced it.

Some time passed and researches starting emerging about e-cigarettes; they may be not as harmless as we had thought these to be initially.

Multiple arguments and cases were made against e-cigarettes, some ranging from how it could turn non-smokers to smokers, etc, etc. e-cigarette users got wary but some vouched for its safety using their personal experience as evidence.

The case of “popcorn lungs” was also cited by many. In the 90s, employees of a popcorn factory started to experience some strange symptoms that included tiredness, short breathing, and wheezing. On further investigation it was found out that the culprit was diacetyl; the key to popcorn’s flavor and the reason for the disease bronchiolitis obliterans. As it turned out diacetyl was perfectly safe to eat, but inhaling it in copious and prolonged amounts was detrimental to health, and caused scar tissue in the lungs.

Now the link between this case and e-cigarettes is, when flavors containing diacetyl started to emerge, this case was cited and people started panicking. E-cigarette vapor was compared to that found in the popcorn factory.

However, vaping advocates pointed out that the analogy was incorrect. The environment of a popcorn factory is very different from that of when inhaling e-cigarette smoke.

Many studies have been done to date on the effects of e-cigarette smoking – there are a few conclusive things that have been established: e-cigarette is most definitely the safer option than traditional smoking, fewer chemicals are inhaled, and yes, some flavoring may be inimical to health.

E-cigarettes come in multiple flavors, and while most companies use food additives for flavors, it is important to bear in mind what is safe to consume are not necessarily safe to inhale. Studies such as the tests carried out by toxicologist Maciej Goniewicz show that e-liquids containing flavoring can cause harm to different degrees. Some flavors are more harmful, while some are less.

For e-cigarette smokers, the ultimate question arises: what is the solution?
