Eating Healthy and Staying Fit at the MVFM

by Lolasouthwell Lola fashionpeople

Everywhere one turns, the media is loudly declaring the importance of eating healthy and staying fit. While that task may sometimes seems a bit overwhelming, the Maple Valley Farmers’ Market makes the goal much easier to achieve by offering local, just-picked produce and locally-created food items each Saturday from 9:00-2:00 on the Rock Creek Elementary grounds.

This Saturday, July 26, is Eating Healthy and Staying Fit Day, sponsored by Maple Valley Fitness. Maple Valley Fitness has been in Maple Valley for 17+ years and promotes a family-friendly, full service fitness center environment offering personal training sessions, childcare, tanning, and much more. Please contact Manager Michel Milat at (425) 432-6110 to learn more about their program offerings.

On this Eating Healthy Saturday, July 26, the Market will feature 21 farmers’ booths, brimming with honey, berries, kale, zucchini and summer squash, peaches, corn, fresh herbs, and many more ingredients to add color, flavor, and vitamins to one’s diet. Those who wish to sample more than just delicious fruits and vegetables should visit the Market Pasta booth for such exotic pastas as chipotle black bean tagliatelle or lemon chive angel hair pasta. These pastas, as well as the array of salad greens from the MVFM, can be made even more delectable by adding oils and or vinegars from the Taste of Eden booth. Some of the most popular varieties include Olive Branch Parmesan Garlic/Herb Bread Dipper, Blood Orange Balsamic Vinegar, and Thai Basil Lemongrass Infused Extra-Virgin Olive Oil.

Visitors who wish to eat healthy, but don’t wish to do the work to prepare the food have several choices on Saturday. EJ’s Catering is back, as he has been every season of the 5+ years of the MVFM, with pulled pork, breakfast burritos and frittatas, artisan salads, soups, and Mango Berry Lemonade. George’s Bakery is overflowing with homemade delicious sugary treats, but they also feature healthy breads and rolls. New this season is Wiseguy Hero Food Truck, operated by Maple Valley resident Jayme Miller, who had sampled the sandwich at the Redmond and Issaquah Farmers’ Markets, and had suggested bringing the truck to Maple Valley Farmers’ Market. The hero is a baguette stuffed with Italian pork sausage with a medley of sautéed red peppers and Walla Walla onions in a homemade Cabernet Sauvignon sauce, and, according to Victoria Laise-Jonas, Market Manager, sold quite successfully its first two weeks at the Market. Miller will bring the food truck back the rest of the 2014 season.

And if eating healthy is going to wait until after the Farmers’ Market, visitors to the Market can splurge on some of the delicious desserts or plate-sized donuts from George’s Bakery; can visit Bigfoot Chocolate, featuring chocolates and caramels, turtles, candies that look like miniature cupcakes; or can check out Old School Treats, a bakery using recipes from earlier generations to make cupcakes, cookies, small cakes, cake slices, pieces, scones, and quick bread, including gluten-free treats. And, one can combine both the sweet and the healthful with Pike Place Nuts--cashews and almonds covered in caramel, cinnamon, coconut, and other decadent delights.

Eating healthy also includes feeding one’s soul, and Farmers’ Market visitors will want to visit the flower stalls to scoop up a huge bouquet of fresh flowers to brighten up the home. Those nurturing their aesthetic side will enjoy the eight artisans visiting the Market on Saturday. They include Henry and I Jewelry, 4 Ever Memories, Amber By Design, Shorty’s Stuff, Blue Heart Creations, Gatlin Gallery’s Vintage Jewelry, Ken Campbell’s Wood, and Always Optimistic. And, youth entrepreneur Megan Johnson will again visit the Market with her jars of candy. Another way to keep the soul fit and healthy is to enjoy some lovely notes of music wafting through the Market, making souls and spirits healthy and fit. This week’s performer is Paul Ross, who performs Native American, Celtic, and New Age music from 11:00-1:00.

Joining us in the nonprofit arena will be returning Kriss Chiropractic, who has supported our eating healthy and staying fit event for the past several years. Also in connection with Saturday’s theme, In Stride Bodywork will have an informational booth. To help with mental fitness and support for caretakers, the Parkinson’s Group will host a non-profit booth, and Master Gardeners will answer those plaguing questions that keep us from good garden health. Also read here:formal dresses australia | bridesmaid dresses online
