If it's bad for the environment, it's bad for you!

What is the first item you look for on a supermarket product's information panel before making a purchasing decision? Is it the expiration date, the nutritional value, or the safety certification?

Did you know that the groceries accessible in the Indian market may contain up to a hundred lethal pesticide residues? These are chemical residues that have been applied to crops at various stages of development. These synthetic pesticides and weedicides are made up of such lethal ingredients that they are not meant to be ingested by humans. Many of these chemicals, such as DDT, are banned in most nations, although manufacturing and use are still permitted in some parts of India.

Metal pollutants such as lead, arsenic, tin, zinc, cadmium, and mercury are the most prevalent residues detected in most of our food products. Insecticide residues include Aldrin, Dieldrin, Carbaryl, Chlordane, and others. Long-term exposure to low levels of Aldrin or Dieldrin produces headaches, dizziness, irritability, vomiting, or involuntary muscle spasms. Some people who are sensitive to Aldrin or Dieldrin appear to have a disorder in which the body destroys its own blood cells. Carbaryl poisoning affects the lungs, kidneys, and liver.

Chlordane has effects on the neurological system, the digestive system, and the liver. Of course, when swallowed, these chemicals enter the body in minute amounts, but their cumulative effect on the human body over time is deadly.

It is not only people who are at risk of lethal chemical exposure from food goods. Changes in the appearance of flora and animals over time as a result of excessive chemical use are no longer unknown. The extinction of several bird species as a result of chemically inhibited crops, the endangering of certain fox species, and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of fish as a result of chemical water released into bodies of water from agricultural farmlands are all examples of how toxic these synthetic chemicals are.

The lack of selective targeting is the primary reason why synthetic pesticides have done more harm than good. Instead of targeting only pests that cause crop damage, synthetic pesticides kill all bugs and beetles, even some that are helpful to crops, such as bees. The Non-Pesticide Management of Agriculture, or NPM, is a relatively easy way to produce pest-free crops while also promoting healthy cultivation. NPM is a method of growing that uses bio-minerals and bio-pesticides, which do not kill pests but rather drive them away.

Farmers who practise NPM utilise a specific pesticide combination. It is made up of all-natural and easily accessible ingredients, including garlic, chilli, neem leaves, and mahua, which are ground and put into a paste before being diluted with water. The crops are subsequently sprayed with this combination. The mixture's unpleasant odour just drives bugs away without killing or harming them, preserving the farmland's ecological equilibrium.

The transition to healthy, sustainable agriculture is a long one. There is no obvious solution to the damage done to our ecosystem by the reckless use of chemicals. We are not only taking care of ourselves, but we are also restoring the balance that gives us life by being a part of the revolution that improves the way we grow our food.
