Dr. Farid Fata and His Cancer-Fraud Scheme

by Fusion 360 Studios Digital Marketing Specialists

Cancer is a very hard disease and illness to overcome. Luckily, chemotherapy, a treatment that can diminish and even remove cancerous elements within the body is readily available. However, what happens when a cancer-free and healthy person living in Provo, Utah or elsewhere starts to receive the treatments? Sometimes a procedure like this could do enough damage to cause a wrongful death. 62

Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

Doctor Farid Fata, one of Michigan’s most respected and revered physicians, did just that. According to an article on Newsweek.com, “…with a sprawling practice across seven cities that had served over 16,000 patients since 2005, Fata was sentenced July 10 to 45 years in prison.” He had a lot of influence and people looked to him for medical expertise and practice. It is too bad that he chose this devastating route.

The article continued with saying, “Last September, he pleaded guilty or no contest to 23 counts of health care fraud, two counts of money laundering and one count of conspiracy to pay and receive kickbacks—but even all that fails to capture the depths of his evildoing.” This shows that he was committing more crimes than just known medical malpractice alone.

It is too bad that a successful doctor like Fata resorted to these schemes and seriously fraudulent actions. If someone were to do this in Provo or another city in Utah, they would undoubtedly pay for their crimes—just as Fata did.

The Scheme

His chemotherapy scheme was pretty disturbing. He would lie to his patients and would tell them that they were terminally ill. This would require them to remain under his care, and in turn meant that he would receive more money. Once they accepted to start chemotherapy treatments, he would pump the poison into their bodies.

Chemotherapy is expensive and this was another way for him to receive even more fraudulent funds. Whether he meant to or not, though, he ended up committing multiple accounts of wrongful death.

Whether you live in Provo or elsewhere and have dealt with a wrongful death in the family, contact a qualified attorney. They can help with your case, or even just bring more clarity to the entire issue.
