Do You Show Your Back Enough Love?by Shakil Hossain BLOG
Your back supports your whole body and having a healthy back is paramount to maintaining a healthy body. Our spine is an amazing thing, so it’s important we take care of it.
Here are some interesting facts from the British Chiropractic Association
In the South East
· 40% of people currently suffering with back or neck pain
· 8% annual increase in back and neck pain
· 28% increase of back and neck pain in under 20’s
Top back of neck pain triggers
· 49% due to lifting or carrying heavy objects
· 41 % sitting for long periods of time
· 35% poor posture
So why aren’t we looking after our backs?
We are taught to look after our teeth form a young age but we’re not taught to look after our backs. If only the same emphasis was used to teach about why are backs are so important and need to look after them as we do about looking after our teeth.
Low back pain is the single largest cause of disability worldwide. The key to a healthy spine and therefore a healthy you is the “P Word”. POSTURE.
There are many modern-day risks to a good posture and among the risks are:
· Over-use of computers and mobile devices
· Carrying heavy bags
· Wearing high heels
Forward leaning posture
This is the habit of dropping the head forward and rounding the shoulders while using mobile devices.
Top tip for this is to be aware of your posture at all times. Take a break from time to time to stretch out the back.
Modern life is also behind the increasing use of very heavy bags. As our lives have become busier, so we tend to carry more and more things around with us on a day-to-day basis.
Top tip, why not try weighing your bag. Look to see how heavy it is. You may be surprised at what weight you have been carrying around on a day to day basis.More than a 1lb is heavy. If you have weighed your bag and less than a 1Ib you are doing great.
Try using a lightweight bag material and multiple compartments to distribute the weight. Pack only what you really need. Rucksacks are great as you can use both shoulder straps to help avoid strain.
Fashion also has a lot to answer for when it comes to bad posture habits. Have you seen the height of some shoes? Some should come with stabilisers!
TOP TIP, wear trainers to and from work and only wear ‘weapons of fashion’ in moderation.
Chiropractor’s are great to help with posture and give advice on how to look after your back. I have learnt a lot from chiropractor’s and found these great website Lushington Chiropractic which has lots of information and a large team of multidisciplinary practitioners.
There is also lots of information on their blogs about posture, back and many other conditions that they can help with. I’ll share their blog site here.
You’ll be able to read about the importance of a healthy back and the important role that posture plays in maintaining a healthy back.
Love your back.
