Different Types of Sealants Available for Marble Stone

by Lisa C. Marketing Writer

You have to seal your marble floor, wall, backsplash, and counter every year in order to keep them as good as new, and maintain their shine, stain resistance, scratch resistance, and water resistance. And just for your information, this is an essential routine.

But when you search for marble sealant on the internet, or visit a vendor nearby, you are often shown different types of sealant. This is a confusing situation, and you end up buying a sealant that does not give you desired look.

In this blog, we talk about different types of marble sealant under the following subsections –

Water-based Sealant –

Sometimes there is water and sometimes there is some kind of solvent used in the sealant. The sealant is evenly applied on the marble stone surface, and then rubbed and absorbed.

Pro Tip: You might not want to use solvent- or chemical-based sealer on your kitchen counter, due to presence of toxins in the solution. For your kitchen counter, you should use water-based sealant only.

Penetrating Sealant –

This is typically a sealer that penetrates into the stone surface, and creates an invisible shield that protects the stone from staining and other vulnerabilities.

Additionally, it helps keep the stone moisturize from the inside and helps increase its life.

To be specific, there are two types of penetrating sealants – Oliophobic and Hydrophobic. And these sealants should be applied either by a professional or someone who knows the right how-to.

Topical Sealant –

Topical sealers are cheaper than penetrating and solvent based sealers. They are made from polymer. It creates a soft layer on the stone surface. Since it easily gets stripped and damaged, you have to reapply the sealant frequently.

This sealer is not a good choice for marble surfaces in outdoor. There are two types of topical sealant – Fluoropolymer and Polyurethane Sealant.
