Insomnia can be differentiated into two main types, which are as follows:-

Primary insomnia is a sleep disorder, which is caused by disturbances in the sleep pattern. This sleep disorder is not caused by any other physical disturbances or prolonged illness. Some of the common signs of primary insomnia are difficulty falling/staying asleep, variable sleep as one attains a sound sleep after a number of troubling slumbers, daytime drowsiness, poor memory, and mood swings.

     II.            Secondary Insomnia

Another type of insomnia called Secondary Insomnia is caused by other health complications. Certain physical or psychological health conditions are responsible for causing this type of insomnia. These health conditions may include arthritis, asthma, chronic pain, allergies, depression, anxiety and stress. Secondary insomnia is also caused by excessive use of alcohol.
