Difference between a logo and an icon

by Logo Recyclers Every Business Starts With An Identity

At first glance, some people think that both logos and icons are the same. After all, both serve the purpose of representing something. But the fact is, although both icon and logo may look alike, they are both very different in terms of designing mindset and required tools. So, what is the difference between a logo and an icon? Well, here’s a quick guide that will give you a clearer picture of the difference between a logo and an icon.

What is a logo?

The logo is not just a symbol, designed by using text and images that help the business identify brands. It can be so much more! From being a cornerstone to your brand’s identify that helps customers understand what you are and what you do, this tiny image carries a lot of responsibility. Aside from looking visually appealing, the logo serves many different functions. It can not only help you stand out from the competition, but it also identifies key information about your business. For maximum effect, make sure your logo is simple, memorable and versatile.

Let’s take a look at a few popular examples of business logo ideas.

Logomark

A logomark not only projects a strong visual appearance for your company but enhances your brand identity as well. This type of logo tends to be more abstract and looks like a symbol without being attached to a brand name. The timeless silhouette logo design of Apple is a great example of the logomark type. Logomarks are pretty simple, easy to remember and instantly representative of the brand, which makes them a great choice for many tech companies.

Logotype

Unlike the logomark, the logotype includes typography (“word mark” is another name for typography in the design industry.) used to indicate the company’s name. This style strengthens the tie between visual memory and name recognition of brands. If you are starting up a new business and would like to have your company name be prominent on your brand’s identity, the logotype is the best option. Google and Facebook are two of the best examples of Logotype. As you can see, Although Google and Facebook are only the names of two companies, their perfect color(s), font(s) and style(s) of lettering make their logos more attractive and everlasting.

Combination mark

As the name implies, a combination mark means the ‘combination’ of two types of logos – the logotype and the logomark. This combination not only enhances the branding message but also helps clarify what a business is all about. Starbucks is a great example of a horizontal combination mark logo.

As you can see, although both logomark and logotype represent Starbucks perfectly on their own, it’s their combination that creates a much more memorable visual for their brand.

What is an icon?

An icon is traditionally recognized as a symbol, used to directly represent an idea, concept, operation, and action. In simple words, an icon’s function is to summarize a process/operation through visual representation, which is then conveyed to the audience. Icons are commonly used in apps, to show what the app does. They can also be used on a responsive web page as an addition to text to help users navigate around the site as humans respond most to visual stimulus.

Let’s take a closer look at the most popular example of an icon that will help you to understand the term better.

Facebook “Like” icon is one of the most recognizable and popular icons. This ‘thumbs up’ gesture was designed exclusively for Facebook, but today, many other social media platforms have copied this concept and turned it into their own. To make it more recognizable, this icon is designed with Facebook’s logo colors which are blue and white. Therefore, there is no need for words: the purpose of the platform is made clear through concise visual information.

Final Thought!

While the icon is often used in logo design to make it more noticeable, both are technically completely different. If you are confused about which one is the right for your business, you need to ask yourself if this image simplifies your business motives? If so, then use an icon. But if you want to represent your brand visually, then opt for a custom logo design.
