The inflow of too much sugar in your blood or excess of blood glucose causes Diabetes, the disease is also known as Diabetes Mellitus. The disease is caused due to inadequate insulin production or if the body does not respond to insulin properly or even both.

The health issues are not just limited to raised level of blood sugar but it may also affect other body parts, if your vision seems blurred or there is some kind of distortion occurring, the condition may be called as Diabetic Retinopathy. The medical condition occurs during high Diabetes where it may gradually affect the eyesight growing weaker till the complete loss of vision. It may prove contagious if not treated in early days. Recognizing the symptoms and treating at early stage may help eliminate the effect.

What are the causes of Diabetic retinopathy?

  • Generally, it happens when the sugar content in the body is high and it leads in clogging or obstruction of small blood vessels which supply blood to the retina. In order to recover with the damage, the eye tries to produce new blood vessels which sometimes leaks and damages the vision completely.
  • In some cases, the newly grown blood vessels are not weak, but they interfere with the stable flow of liquid. This puts on undue pressure on the eyeball. In such cases, the optic nerves are damaged which cause glaucoma.

What are the symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy?

The symptoms may not appear at the initial stage; they start affecting in the later stage where it would have been damaged to a larger extent.

  1. Cloudy vision on and off.
  2. Eye floaters, the floating protein and blood cells obstructing the vision
  3. Fluctuation of color vision
  4. Gradual loss of vision

What are the treatments of Diabetic retinopathy?

The treatments for Diabetic Retinopathy are surgical for the maximum times, other solutions may not affect at times.

  • Vitrectomy : A slight incision is made in the eye to remove the blood accumulating in the middle of the eye along with the scar tissue that the retina has on it.
  • Focal Laser : Laser burns are used to treat the faulty blood vessels that are leaking.
  • Scatter Laser : This treatment uses laser burns to shrink the malfunctioning or leaking blood vessels or the scar tissue that clouds vision by accumulating on the retina.
