Diabetes during Pregnancy can Cause Kidney Disease

by Anishka Sharma Consultant at Healboat

Recent studies have shown that there is a higher risk of kidney disease during pregnancy, if there are gestational diabetic symptoms in pregnant women.

These studies were conducted in New York. All the tests seem to indicate that during the Gestational Diabetes, a condition pertaining to high blood sugar in women during the pregnancies can in fact, lead to kidney disease that would eventually elevate to kidney failure.

The study notes

It was noted that when during the high blood sugar conditions during pregnancies (gestational Diabetes), women are more likely to have a high rate of Glomerular filtration rate- which is the estimation of the amount of blood per minute that passes through the tiny filters of the kidney (Glomeruli). It is the job of the Glomeruli to extract the waste material from the blood. They found that the GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) in the pregnant women tend to be around 3 times normal if they encounter gestational diabetes. In this case, there is a significant higher chance of encountering a kidney disease if the rate persists.

Diabetes during Pregnancies

The study is fairly new

The matter of study is fairly new. To that end, the only way to check for kidney problems during pregnancy symptoms, a more thorough analysis of the study is needed to be done. However, if any women have had the presence of gestational diabetes when they were pregnant, they should get a prompt check up for their kidneys to see if there are any signs for the onset of kidney disease.

A thing of note however

One thing to know about the circumstance however is that Gestational diabetes is not really a disease, it is a phase during the pregnancy that may or may not happen. Therefore, it is not necessary to worry about it. Furthermore, the entire study is a bit circumstantial. It means that there might be an increase level of urinary albumin in case of high blood sugar during pregnancy, a lot more research is still needed to be done to get a more conclusive yes as to whether gestational diabetes REALLY causes diabetes or not.

On this note, if you have any sort of symptoms pertaining to the kidneys, you should look for kidney treatment in India. The doctors and the care can make sure that GD is not the reason for it.
