Indian army recruitment is usually done under two types of commission, permanent commission and short service commission. The details of the two commissions and the recruitment process done under each commission are mentioned below.

Courses Under Permanent Commission                                      

Permanent commission in Indian army offers you a long term career till you retire from the job. For this you need to join Indian military academy or national defense academy. After completing class XI you can take the NDA test conducted by UPSC and can join national defense academy. The other one is the Indian military academy where candidates get four entries to enter into here. The first one is the combined defense service examination conducted by UPSC where you can apply while studying in the final year of your graduation period and need to qualify in the exam. The other three entries are non UPSC entries which mean there is no exam where you are directly called for interview. In 10+2 tech entry you can apply directly after completing 12^th standard with a minimum of 70% aggregate in PCM. There is an option for pre-final year engineering students to join the Indian army through university entry scheme. Technical graduate course is for the engineering final year and completed students, where they can join Indian military academy through a direct SSB interview.

Course Under Short Service Commission

Through short service commission you can serve the Indian army through a short period of ten years. You can either select permanent commission or resign after this period. There is an option for extending the service to 4 more years if you do not want to join permanent commission and at any time during this period you can resign. In order to serve Indian army through short service commission you need to join officers training academy. Indian army offers short service courses for women candidates also in officers training academy.
