The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is the criminal investigative arm of the state government of Tennessee.  It was established in March 27, 1980 by the Tennessee General Assembly.

TBI is the central depository for criminal history information in Tennessee, and it provides public access to criminal background checks when properly requested. That is because anyone who was arrested and fingerprinted in the state of Tennessee was reported for inclusion in TBI’s database. And because Tennessee is an open record state, a single set of fingerprints can give you a list of all the crimes someone conducted. The TBI began offering background checks to the public in July of 2004.

On the other hand, public requests for criminal background checks in Tennessee are also name based. Authorized employers can require a fingerprint based research, however, it is not available to the public.

For a name based research you will need name, date of birth, social security number, race, gender and current address. The cost for criminal history information is $29.00 per request and is non-refundable.

Tennessee Criminal History Check through Tennessee Open Records Information Services (TORIS)

Tennessee Open Records Information Services (TORIS) background check is available to the public. This check is name based only for the State of Tennessee.  If you can supply the name, date of birth, race and sex of the searched individual, you can certainly request a criminal history check for a fee of $29.00.

If you include a current address and social security number, it will increase the chances of your search. If there is no record found, your request will be returned stating “The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation found NO Tennessee criminal history base on the information provided.”

However, be aware that unless there is no fingerprint comparison performed, it is impossible for Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to know if the record belongs to the individual you requested. All the information you receive are based only on arrests which occurred in Tennessee.  A fingerprint comparison will only be performed as the result of an appeal based on the information received from an initial criminal history request.

Also, if you are requesting a criminal background check for  adoption, immigration or other purposes that need to be notarized, you need to submit the application via mail or fax, because the background check must be returned via mail.

There are two ways to make a Tennessee criminal background check through TORIS:

1.  You can submit an electronic application to TBI if you have a credit card and an email address. You need to complete the form with your information, credit card payment of $29.00 and the information about the subject’s information. The requested results will be emailed if an electronic application is submitted.

2. You can download and complete the application if you have a credit card, money order or cashier’s check, then submit to the TBI by fax or mail, including the payment of $29.00. The requested results will be returned via mail, if there is no email address provided.
