Confirm your Gluten Intolerance with an Apt Test before Planning your Diet

by Immu Food Executive
Gluten is a family of proteins found in wheat, barley, rye and triticale and almost all forms of wheat contain gluten. These proteins bind food together in order to maintain their shape. Besides, even many everyday foods like pasta, bread, and beer have gluten along with several other variety of foods. It is discovered that a significant number of people experience an adverse reaction on consuming gluten, meaning that those people must avoid gluten containing foods to avoid its harmful effects. People who develop adverse reaction on consuming gluten might be suffering from gluten intolerance or Celiac disease. Person intolerant to gluten experiences abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, headache and fatigue after consuming gluten.

People with gluten intolerance have problem with gluten and their symptoms disappeared upon gluten withdrawal from their diet, as the gluten free diet leads to complete regression of symptoms. It is commonly observed that most of the people self diagnosed them with gluten intolerance and start a gluten free diet without any medical advice or consultation. Since, there is great overlap in symptoms between gluten intolerance and other gastrointestinal disorders, thereby making diagnosis of gluten intolerance becomes difficult even for doctors. In such circumstances, people are advised to refrain from self treatment and should consult with their doctor or dietitian to receive the apt treatment. Though, such people may even opt for gluten intolerance test, which will help them know that whether they suffer from gluten intolerance or not.

Around 18 million people in the United States are gluten intolerant, they need to focus on their symptoms and must accordingly plan their diet to eliminate all such food items that contain gluten. To help these people, the FDA has enacted a law in August 2013 that instruct food manufacturers to label their products that are safe for consumption by gluten intolerant people. People must also keep in mind that some non-food products may also contain gluten in the form of lecithin, so they must also check this while checking food label. Eliminating gluten from their diet means that people have to give up breads, pizza, pasta, cereals and beer along with many other products like soy sauce, frozen vegetables in sauces, foods made with natural flavorings and even some toothpastes. This makes planning gluten free diet extremely challenging.

The most vital aspect of managing gluten intolerance is that people should first confirm that they indeed are gluten intolerant by taking intolerance test. Self-diagnosing can be inaccurate and will make them miss out on a variety of foods. Thus, people must always opt for a quality gluten intolerance test that help them accordingly plan the diet. However, it is always best to consult with doctor or registered dietitian for achieving a more personalized nutrition care.
