Complete Guide For Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand's Char Dham Yatra consists of four shrines where God and Goddess reside. These shrines -Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, together form the Chhota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. As well as a pilgrimage, the Char Dham Yatra offers a spiritual journey.

Hindu pilgrims begin flocking to the ancient temples of Char Dham in late April when the snow at the foothills of the Himalayas has cleared. These sacred temples, located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, mark the source of four sacred rivers: the Yamuna (at Yamunotri), the Ganges (at Gangotri), the Mandakini (at Kedarnath), and the Alaknanda (at Badrinath). The Char Dham is considered very auspicious by Hindus. Besides being blessed for washing away all sins, it will also free you from the cycle of birth and death. Char Dham Yatras come in a variety of forms.

After the Indo-China war of 1962, when India started investing in road and infrastructure development, the Chota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand became popular. Due to the improved roads in the region, it became easier to access the holy shrines and other places of Uttarakhand, formerly Uttar Pradesh. Chhota Char Dham gradually replaced the original Char Dham.

How one should go for Char Dham Yatra

Uttarakhand's Char Dham Yatra follows a west-east direction. So, the route of Char Dham yatra is that you start from Yamunotri, head to Gangotri, and cover Kedarnath and Badrinath in the end respectively. Each temple is devoted to a Hindu god and goddess. Yamunotri and Gangotri are devoted to river goddesses Yamuna and Ganga, while Kedarnath is the abode of Lord Shiva. Then comes the Badrinath temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Yamunotri Temple:- Yamunotri Temple is dedicated to top Goddess Yamuna, source of River Yamuna. The temple is located in the mountains of  Uttarakhand's western region. Visitors and devotees may also take a dip in the two hot springs near the shrine to relieve tiredness. One is Surya Kund and the other one is Gauri Kund. The temple can only be reached on foot.

Gangotri Temple:- Located on the banks of the Ganga River, this temple is dedicated to Lordess Ganga. The source of the River Ganges-Gaumukh is only 18 km from the temple. Gangotri is a small town centered encompassing the temple. The scenery of this temple is breathtaking, being surrounded by snow-capped mountains and flowing rivers. As it is situated across the temple itself, Gangotri Yatra is not as tough as Kedarnath Yatra.

Kedarnath Temple:- Located in the mountains of Gharwal, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva by the banks of the Mandakini River. The temple's architecture and location both are captivating. The fact that the ancient temple structure remained intact despite the floods is fascinating. The last road head is Gaurikund. If you have the stamina, you can either take a pony or trek 14 km long. Kedarnath Yatra is undertaken every season by devotees to seek Lord Shiva's blessings before it is closed in the winter.

Badrinath Temple:- The Badrinath temple is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The temple has a colorful façade and houses the black idol of Lord Vishnu. By road, Badrinath temple is easily attainable. However, you can also trek 3 km from the village of Mana, the last village on the Indo-Tibetan border.
