Common WordPress Errors And How To Fix Them

by Suncoast Web Solutions Suncoast Web Solutions
According to the last count, 18.9% of all websites are WordPress - that's nearly 75 million! It is by far the most prominent Content Management System around, but that doesn't mean things don't go wrong occasionally.

It has to be said that, more often than not, it's user error! WordPress is very easy to use but, if you're new to the world of website building, it can still be tricky.

The great thing about WordPress is that it is easy enough to be used by beginners, but versatile enough for professional website development teams to turn into something really special. What's more, because it is so popular, there are heaps of helpful forums and other sources of help and advice out there.

Beware The White Screen Of Death

Your website will tell you when something is wrong. Or you will experience what is lovingly referred to as the White Screen of Death! Don't be alarmed - you can fix that, too. PHP and database errors can result in a blank white screen. If it's a plug-in compatibility issue, try deactivating all your plug-ins and then reactivating them one by one.

If the white screen appears just after you've activated a new theme, the theme may be the problem. Log into Administration Screens and activate the default WordPress Twenty Sixteen theme.

500 Internal Server Error

A common error message to receive is 'Internal Server Error' or '500 Internal Server Error'. This is always a fun one as it most likely means the server is unable to identify the problem, and you'll have to find it yourself!

The most likely cause is a corrupted .htaccess file. The solution is to log into your site root using FTP, then rename the file .htaccess_old. Now try loading your site. If that fails, go to the step above, and deactivate/reactivate all your plug-ins, or revert to the WordPress Twenty Sixteen theme.

Database Connection

Your error message might tell you that there is a problem establishing a database connection. This could be caused by an error in your wp-config.php file. Log into your site using FTP, open the file, and check your database name, username, password and host are all correct.

Alternatively, it could be a problem with your web host and that is very easily fixed - change web host! More often than not, problems are not caused by the website, but by a poor quality host - usually the ones that are free or ridiculously cheap.

Choose A Professional Web Hosting Company

If you want your website to be accessible and successful, change to a professional hosting service that offers an uptime guarantee. Quality web development teams on the Sunshine Coast will be able to help you with this.

There are many more possible errors but let's finish on that old favourite, 404 - Oops! That page can't be found! This is most likely caused by a problem with your permalink settings in WordPress. You will need to reconfigure the permalinks settings, or manually update the rewrite rules.

Alternatively, you can turn to professional web development services on the Sunshine Coast to design, host and help you manage your site. I know what I'll be choosing!
