Common Tips For Preventing Water Damage

by Kevin Smith Author

Unfortunately, some homeowner’s insurance policies only cover a certain amount of water damage claims. However, you can prevent getting stuck with the bill by preventing your home suffering from water damage in Marietta in the first place. Here are a few tips to prevent water damage to being with.

Clean Out Gutters

Regularly cleaning out your gutters is an important task to do. Although it may take some time and effort, the last thing you want blocking water in your gutters is birds’ nests, dirt, sticks, and other debris. Unfortunately, if you do leave your gutters clogged, it can seep into your home’s foundation or start flooding the basement, causing nearly irreversible water damage.

Plan Where You Plant

Certain trees and plants, such as weeping willows, have invasive roots that can grow into your pipes, septic plants, and sprinkler system. This is why it’s important to choose a plant that won’t affect your yard or home. The last thing you want is a plant in your garden breaking a water line and causing severe water damage in your home.

Use a Drain Snake Over Chemicals

At some point in your home’s life, you’re going to have to deal with a clogged kitchen or bathroom sink. Although it may be tempting to pour an entire bottle of drain clearing chemicals down your drains, you should avoid it. Most of these chemicals actually eat away at your pipes, which can lead to future leaks. Instead, use a simple drain snake to clear clogs and get your sink up and working again. Plus, a pack of snakes usually only cost a few dollars and are sold at most local hardware stores.

Don’t Pour Grease Down Your Sink

You should generally avoid pouring grease down your sink at all times, even if you flush it with water or detergent. Grease can stick to your pipes and cause expensive damage and blockages that are hard to fix. Instead, you should freeze the grease into a solid and then toss it out. There’s no point in taking an unnecessary risk to your pipes. However, this goes with other sticky liquids and foods as well. The only thing you should be pouring down your sink is water and some liquids. However, you should also consider getting a proper drain for your sink to avoid blockages and water damage in Marietta in the future.
