Common Problems that arise with Hair Cutting Scissors

by Pathlie Lee Business consultant

When you’re a stylist or hairdresser, your most important tool is a good pair of hair cutting scissors. With proper care and maintenance, your scissors are likely to last through thousands of haircuts. However, there are some common issues that you can encounter with hair cutting scissors. Here are just a few, as well as how to address them:

Hair Bending or Being Pinched Rather than Cut

Scissors should make a clean, sharp cut every time you close the blades. However, dull blades can bend or crimp hair rather than cutting through it. To fix this, ensure your blades are always sharp.

To do this, use a sharpening stone. These can often be purchased from the same retailers where you buy your shears and other hair cutting supplies. To ensure your stone is ready for use, soak it in light oil overnight. After it is ready, strike each blade to sharpen it ten times. After sharpening, check for burrs or metal shavings caused by the sharpening process by rapidly opening and closing the blades. In the event of an uneven blade, repeat the process until the blades are sharp yet free of blemishes.

Hair Being Caught, Pulled, or Torn During Cutting, or Sliding Up the Blade

Hair being caught in the blades or joint screw of your scissors doesn’t just make for a bad haircut – it can be painful for your clients!

To prevent this and address the similar issue of having hair slide up the blade rather than being cut properly, be sure your blades are sharp and that your scissors are properly adjusted. Ig your blades close too loosely or too tightly, they will simply damage the hair rather than cutting it. Adjust at the joint screw and check for proper adjustment regularly.

Scissors Not Moving or Closing Properly

When you use a pair of scissors to cut hair, you’ll find that over time, they begin to slow or roughen in their movement. This is because tiny particles of hair and chemicals from hair care and styling products build up around the joint that allows the blades to move. When this buildup happens, the joint becomes jammed, and your scissors can’t move freely.

To address this, clean your scissors. Apply a drop of metal-safe oil to the joint screw and rub the open blades from the joint outward with a dry, soft cloth. Finish by moving the blades several times, closing them and opening in turn to free up the joint. The oil and friction will dislodge any buildup and help get your scissors back on track.

To ensure that your scissors will work for as long as possible with little to no problems, be sure to invest in a good pair from a reputable retailer. You can trust that beauty supply retailers know what they’re selling and how to outfit your salon or chair with the kind of tools you need to be successful. Get in touch with your local beauty retailer or browse online with a reputable supplier to find a great pair of scissors and remember – keep them clean, keep them working, and keep yourself in business longer!
