Cleaning A Car Battery? Follow These 8 Simple Steps

by Ankita Sehgal Freelance Blogger, Lives in New Delhi
Corroded car battery terminals may be an annoying hassle, but cleaning them may not be as difficult as you visualise. They tend to leak corrosive material which damages the battery and reduces its efficiency. If you are having trouble starting your car because of build-up on the battery, follow these easy steps to clean the battery and get your car working without wasting money and time:

Turn off the engine

Do not start cleaning a live engine, because this may cause grounding of the cables. Also, ensure that the parking brake is on to prevent the vehicle from moving.

Check the battery to see whether it is damaged

If the battery is seriously damaged due to corrosion or severe rusting, you should consider getting an Amaron battery replacement which is better for the long-run and will prevent the need for future repairing or further issues.

Figure out the tools you will need

Determine whether you will need an 8 mm wrench (if the terminals are on the side) or a 10 mm/13 mm wrench (if the terminals are on the top of the battery) to loosen the cable nuts.

Removing the cables

Most vehicles have a negative grounding, so loosen the clamp nut on the black cable first with the wrench and then remove the cable from the negative post. Similarly, remove the clamp nut on the red cable, and disconnect the cable from the positive post.

Examine the battery

Again, check to see if the battery is leaking acid from cracks. Also, check the cables and clamps. If they have tears, they must be replaced. To do so, you can check the Exide car battery price list for sale and buy a new battery.

Baking soda

Prepare a baking soda solution with water and baking soda. Dip a brush into the solution and apply it onto the chemical or acid-covered areas, especially the clamps and posts.

Cleaning of the baking soda

Ensure that the baking soda mixture is rinsed off with water, and dry the battery with a towel. Petroleum jelly can be applied to lubricate and reduce corrosion.

Connecting the cables

Reattach the positive cable first to the positive terminal and fasten the nut on the clamp. Repeat the same procedure with the negative cable.

Remember to carry baking soda, gloves and a towel with you for any emergency battery cleaning. Keep an adjustable wrench in your car as well. After following these steps, your battery should operate normally. If not, consult an expert.
