Clayton Valley Charter High School Receives Unanimous Five-Year Charter Authorization Approval

CONCORD, CALIFORNIA (December 18, 2014) –
Clayton Valley Charter High School (CVCHS) has received unanimous
reauthorization of its charter by the Contra Costa County Board of
Education for a five-year period. Since its initial three-year approval
following a lengthy process the community to establish the first
comprehensive teacher conversion charter high school in Northern
California, CVCHS has seen tremendous academic achievement results and
other measures of success.
Since opening in August, 2012, Clayton
Valley Charter High School achieved the largest increase in Academic
Performance Index (API) of any large comprehensive high school in
California, a rise of 62 points in one year. CVCHS has met all of its
federal Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) goals as a whole and across all
subgroups. CVCHS earned a six year clear term of accreditation from the
Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the highest level of
praise that WASC bestows, and in March, 2014, Executive Director David
Linzey was invited by Representative George Miller to address the U.S.
House of Representatives Education and the Workforce Committee on the
subject of “Raising the Bar: The Role of Charter Schools in K-12
Education.”
Reauthorization of a charter can be granted if a
school meets one of four criteria. After two public hearings where the
Board heard favorable testimony from a number of stakeholders in the
community, including several local public officials, the Board found
that CVCHS had met, not one, but all four criteria, and voted
unanimously to accept the recommendation of county staff to approve
reauthorization. With the results CVCHS has earned the past three years,
it is clear that Clayton Valley Charter High School is an outstanding
school that is preparing all of its students for college and the careers
of the 21st century.
