Chlorine isn’t merely the swimming pool chemical that many of us are most familiar with – it’s also the UK’s most commonly used disinfectant for swimming pools, and the most important chemical as far as the all-round maintenance of pool water is concerned.

What role does pool chlorine play?

The importance of swimming pool chlorine lies in how, by maintaining the right level in your own pool, you can ensure almost all bacteria and viruses that find their way into the water are killed within a few seconds. This will help to preserve the clarity and safety of the water for you and anyone else using your pool.

How much chlorine should be in your pool?

Whatever type of chlorine you add to your pool, the process of dissolving it in water produces hypochlorous acid (HOCl), which is what kills bacteria, viruses and algae in the water. This is often called ‘free chlorine’.

However, while public indoor pools in the UK attempt to maintain a free chlorine level of between 1.0 and 1.5 ppm, it is advised that you aim for a slightly higher amount in your domestic pool – especially if it is outdoors – to give a better margin of safety.

For indoor domestic pools, then, a free chlorine level of between 1 and 2 ppm is advised, increasing to between 2 and 3 ppm in the case of outdoor pools.
