CBD: Is It Safe For Dogs?

by Troy M. Mr

Cannabis-based products like CBD and organic hemp oil have been wildly popular in recent years. This is thanks to the growing number of scientific studies showing the healing properties of cannabidiol for people.  But some dog owners have begun wondering if man's best friend can also benefit from cannabidiol.

The good news is that yes, CBD oil is safe for your dog to use — as long as it is given responsibility.

First Things First: Differentiating CBD from THC

The confusion between CBD and THC has turned many prospective users away from the oil’s therapeutic capabilities.

It is true that both are chemical compounds found in the cannabis sativa family. They are dominant substances in the hemp and marijuana plants, respectively. However, although THC or tetrahydrocannabinol provides the psychoactive effects that are sought after by many weed users, CBD does not.

Dog owners need not worry about their pets getting intoxicated when ingesting cannabidiol. However, they should be careful if the dog has eaten anything with marijuana in it as it can lead to marijuana poisoning. It is highly advised that you seek medical help for them as soon as possible.

How Can Cannabidiol Help Your Dog?

Most, if not all, of the healing properties that humans can get from ingesting CBD oil, can be enjoyed by dogs as well. Here are just some of them:

Relieve Anxiety

Some dogs are prone to having separation anxiety and panic attacks. This can lead to them developing unwanted habits like destroying shoes and furniture or urinating and defecating anywhere. Just as a human can use CBD for its calming effects, so can it be for dogs as well.

Treating Seizures

Studies have revealed that cannabidiol can be used for people dealing with types of epilepsy that are typically resistant to drugs. Dogs suffering from seizures can use this instead of prescription drugs which can damage other organs in their body.

Reduce Pain

One of the most popular properties of CBD is its pain relieving and anti-inflammatory capabilities. The oil can help ease the discomfort of ailing dogs and treat any internal inflammations they may be suffering from. This can also be useful with dog breeds that are more susceptible to arthritis and other joint issues.

Ways To Incorporate CBD In Your Dog’s Diet

When you've finally decided to add cannabidiol to your dog’s daily diet, you can try giving it through capsules or tinctures.

CBD oils in glass dropper bottles will let you have better control over the amount that you give to your dog. However, you may find that dog treats will be more appealing to them. The downside is that you do not have as much control on the dosage unless you make your treats.

Be A Responsible Dog Owner and CBD User

For your dog’s safety, be sure that you are buying organic CBD oil from a licensed seller. It should not contain any other substances that can be toxic to animal consumption. Consult with a veterinarian first before giving your dog any oil.
