Caring about the Environment

by Joseph Marie General You may have heard that the environment we live in is extremely fragile and now needs our help more than ever. Global warming, access to pure water, air pollution, reduced biodiversity, deforestation and so on and so forth, are all the environmental issues frequently mentioned in the news, and a lot depends today on how we are going to respond to all of these threats for the well-being of our planet. Perhaps nothing demonstrates the devastating state of the environment today as much as the water situation – let’s look at two examples.

Hotels, golf courses and others

If you travel to some of the poorest countries in the world in Africa, you will be surprised that you may have easy and convenient access to running water at your five star hotel. Outside the hotel you may find an enormous golf complex that caters to true connoisseurs of the sport, with ample space, lavish lawns and a general atmosphere of prosperity and abundance. Importantly, just outside of this tourist spot you will most likely find locals struggling to carry pure water home from a single water well. No running water systems are to be found. The hotel and the golf courses may well be using the same water sources but through modern technology. The question of how all of this can coexist in the same environment is pressing. It has been pressing for years, in fact.

Welcome to the desert California

 The drought situation in the state of California has made many headlines. Judging by the numbers made available, things are getting worse in terms of the water situation there with every passing day. Crops are left without water, entire communities are asked to conserve water, and wildlife and flora suffer. At the same time, large corporations continue to pump water for industrial and commercial purposes, including bottled water. What are your thoughts on this? How much more would the environment of California be able to sustain human presence in its current form?

Education should lead to action

In today’s world of fast information overload, there is hardly an excuse for not knowing about the urgent problems with the Earth’s environment. Many people, however, do not act on this knowledge that they gather from multiple sources. What can you as a regular citizen do to help preserve the world for future generations, so that the children of today’s children would still be able to walk in the grass and drink pure natural water and breathe fresh air? There are plenty of specific steps that are open to you each and every day of your life, from turning off the lights when they are not needed to installing energy-efficient appliances to not leaving the water running to switching to a more eco-friendly mode of transportation. You have the power to change things around and to spread what you know to your family, friends and other contacts. Are you ready to take this challenge?
