Trading and Investment are two different things done in the market.

Investment is done for creating wealth by accumulating different stocks in your portfolio for a long-term view. Investment can be diversified in different stocks to balance one’s portfolio. There is no any rule of selecting no. of stocks for one portfolio and there can be n number of stocks in one portfolio but having many shares may create difficulties in tracking portfolio. So a limited number of stocks should be there may be around 15.The portfolio should be diversified in a different segment of the market and also it should be reviewed on every quarter basis. Remember there is no any need to track your portfolio stocks on the daily basis otherwise it will create panic in your mind. The selection of stocks should be only done on the basis of fundamental analysis. Entry and exit in a particular stock can also be tracked with the help of technical analysis.

Trading, on the other hand, is done for making some money in a short term or ultra-short term. Trading stocks are different compared to Investment stocks although trading can be done in each and every stocks. The selection criterion for trading according to me should be in mid-cap or in those stocks where it is supported along with technical analysis. It means technical analysis should be the most important thing for trading. Speculative trading should be avoided but many of retail trader is speculator only. Proper target and stop loss should be maintained in every trade. All the trade should be emotionless and greed-free.

Traders generally fall into one of four categories:

1. Position Trader – positions are held from months to year

2. Swing Trader – positions are held from days to weeks

3. Day Trader – positions are held throughout the day only with no overnight positions

4. Scalp Trader – positions are held for seconds to minutes with no overnight positions
